The Summer Olympics are on the horizon, and with Paris, the ‘City of Light’ abuzz with thrill and excitement for the upcoming games, we’ve been inspired to look back at some of the great cities that have hosted the multi-sport event. Time to embrace the Olympic spirit and the famed cities where the games took place.
1. Athens, Greece
First stop, the place where it all began – Athens, the capital of Greece and the first city to host the Summer Olympics in 1896. Rooted in deep history, the ancient city offers plenty to visitors near and far who intend to explore it.
From the historical landmarks and ancient ruins such as the Acropolis, Parthenon, and the Temple of Olympian Zeus to catamaran tours on the Aegean Sea and wine tasting at the finest Greek restaurants, there truly is something for everyone.
Olympic fiends can make a trip to the Panathenaic Stadium where the first modern Olympic Games were hosted. Built entirely of white marble, the stadium is an architectural marvel you would not want to miss.
2. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in the world, the city of Rio de Janeiro is magnetic, drawing visitors from all over the world to its stunning beaches, mountains, and of course, The Carnival festival. The celebration floods the streets with giant parade floats, extravagant costumes, and infectious music and dance.
The city is also known for its iconic landmarks – Christ the Redeemer and Sugarloaf Mountain among others. Hit up the famous beaches like Copacabana, Ipanema, Barra da Tijuca, and Leblon, take a cable car up Sugarloaf Mountain and view the city from above, or sample their national dish, Feijoada (Pork, Beef and Beans Stew), Coxinha (Brazilian Chicken Croquettes), Empadinhas (Savoury pies), and more.
3. Munich, Germany
Next on our list is the medieval city of Munich, cited for its many centuries-old cathedrals, palaces, museums, and traditions. The city is both alluring and enchanting, and attracts numerous travellers to partake in its annual Oktoberfest. Although there are many reasons to visit Munich all year round, Neuschwanstein Castle, Marienplatz, the BMW Museum, New Town Hall, and the English Garden are notable attractions.
If you find yourself in the city, a trip to Olympiapark will be well worth it. The Olympic Park was first built in 1972 for the Summer Olympics and after over 50 years, it still hosts cultural and sporting events today. The design of the park was inspired by the landscape and foothills of the Alpine and is a great place to explore on foot or by bike.
4. Tokyo, Japan
Japan’s bustling capital metropolis is the ultimate destination for the modern-day traveller. Art, technology, history, and tradition come together in neon-lit skyscrapers and traditional Japanese architecture. There’s no doubt that there is much to explore in Tokyo.
The Olympic Flame made its way to the kaleidoscopic city in the summer of 2021 just as the world was recovering from the pandemic. In a place known for innovation and reinvention, the Japan National Stadium, where the games took place, was demolished and reconstructed into the new and futuristic stadium we see today.
5. Seoul, South Korea
Known for more than just being the birthplace of K-pop, Seoul is one of the most fascinating cities in the world with much to explore between its various and delicious foods, rich history, tech, fashion, and art scene. Whether you are planning on immersing yourself in the culture, food, or architectural marvels of the country, the city and its people will leave you dreaming of it long after you have left this place.
The Olympic Park or Olpark in Bangi-dong, Songpa District was built in 1988. The Olympic Park World Peace Gate at the Peace Square is a historical landmark worth the trip. Locals often take leisurely strolls in the park or skate by the square.
6. Sydney, Australia
There’s never a bad time to visit Sydney and the famous Sydney Harbour and Opera House. Come winter, spring, summer, or autumn, the New South Wales’ capital makes the most of each season. You will find that the city centre, its quay, markets, cafes, and beaches beckon your presence as soon as you arrive.
With so much to see, do, partake in, and experience, there is hardly any time to waste—yet, the laid-back and relaxed lifestyle of the people will encourage you to do just that. We only ask one thing: That you do not protest and simply take the days and the pleasures they bring as they come.
7. Paris, France
Ah, we’ve finally arrived at the City of Light, Paris, host of the 2024 Olympic Games. If you haven’t had a reason to visit this dazzling city, this is your sign. This French city is a melting pot of cultures, with stunning art, architecture (yes, we think the Eiffel Tower is impressive), food, and style everywhere you look.
They are no stranger to hosting the Olympics, and with the games fast approaching, tourists are set to flood the city throughout the Olympic season. Though experiencing the games in person will be a highlight in itself, a trip to the city any other time will be just as rewarding.
