If you’re already planning your next Bangkok cafe crawl, Krabi beach escape, or weekend food hunt in Hat Yai, here’s a travel update worth noting. Thailand has approved revisions to its visa exemption programme that will reduce the visa-free stay for many visitors, including Malaysians, from the temporary 60-day allowance back to 30 days.
While the change may sound significant, it is unlikely to affect the vast majority of Malaysian travellers, whose trips typically last well under a month.
When will Thailand’s new visa-free rules take effect?
Thailand’s Cabinet has approved the revised measures, but they are not yet in force. They will take effect only 15 days after publication in Thailand’s Royal Gazette. Until then, the current entry rules remain unchanged.
What exactly is changing?
Malaysians will continue to enjoy visa-free entry into Thailand, but the maximum stay will return to 30 days, down from the temporary 60-day allowance introduced in 2024 as part of Thailand’s post-pandemic tourism recovery efforts.

Malaysia is among dozens of countries affected by the revision, which standardises visa-free stays across many nationalities rather than targeting any one country.
Travellers who enter Thailand before the new rules take effect will still be allowed to remain for the duration of the stay originally granted to them.
Who will be most affected?
For the average Malaysian traveller, this is unlikely to make much difference. Most holidays to Thailand last anywhere from a few days to two weeks.
The people most likely to feel the impact are those who have been using Thailand as a longer-term base. Digital nomads, retirees spending part of the year in Thailand, slow travellers exploring the country at a leisurely pace, and others planning extended stays may now need to apply for a suitable long-stay visa instead of relying solely on visa-free entry.
For travellers intending to stay beyond 30 days, Thailand continues to offer a range of visa options depending on the purpose and length of their visit.

Why Thailand is tightening its visa-free entry policy
The 60-day visa-free stay was introduced in 2024 to encourage international tourism as Thailand continued its post-pandemic recovery. With visitor numbers rebounding, the government is now tightening its visa exemption framework while keeping Thailand easily accessible to genuine tourists.
According to Thai authorities, the revision aims to reduce the misuse of visa exemptions for activities such as unauthorised work, improve traveller screening through a “one country, one entry category” approach, and simplify what had become overlapping entry privileges. Enhanced screening through the Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) system will also continue.
For most Malaysians, however, the practical takeaway is simple: if you’re heading to Thailand for a typical holiday, city break, or beach escape, your travel plans are unlikely to change.
