For anyone who travels regularly between Kuala Lumpur and Johor Bahru, the journey itself has long been part of the problem. With year-round demand driven by work, family ties, and weekend travel, the KL–JB corridor has finally received the upgrade it deserves. The newly launched Electric Train Service (ETS) between KL Sentral and JB Sentral is changing the travel landscape.

A route Malaysians rely on, all year round

KL–JB is one of the country’s busiest domestic routes. Weekends draw city dwellers south to visit family or get out of town, while weekdays remain packed with commuters and business travellers. Add school holidays and festive seasons, and highways often grind to a halt. It’s why ETS tickets were snapped up quickly from the start, as travellers have long been looking for a more reliable alternative.

What the ETS service looks like

The ETS runs directly between KL Sentral and JB Sentral, connecting both city centres without detours. The journey takes around 4.5 hours, offering a predictable travel time that doesn’t fluctuate with traffic conditions. To meet demand, service frequency will increase in January, making it easier to secure seats for weekend trips or regular commutes.

What sets the ETS apart is the experience on board. Passengers enjoy spacious seats, air-conditioned coaches, and a smooth ride equipped with power sockets for work or entertainment. Arriving directly in the city centre means no expensive transfers and no battling congestion. You board, settle in, and arrive refreshed.

How it compares to buses and flights

Buses remain cheaper, but they’re also the most vulnerable to traffic delays, especially during peak periods. Flights may be quicker in the air, but once you factor in airport transfers, check-in times and queues, the advantage shrinks fast. The ETS sits comfortably in between. It offers a smoother, more predictable experience than buses, without the hassle and fragmentation of flying.

For travellers who want fewer headaches and more breathing room, the KL–JB ETS could well become the new default way to head south.
