It goes without saying that, for Malaysians, Penang comes up tops as one of their favourite places for a family holiday. From scrumptious street cuisine to heritage architecture and a laid-back ambiance, the city never fails to amaze, even when we return over and over again.
So, it comes as no surprise that Penang’s architectural heritage gem, Cheong Fatt Tze, popularly known as The Blue Mansion, took home the title of global Luxury Heritage Hotel at the World Luxury Hotel Awards 2021. The gala ceremony took place amidst nearly 1000 participants hosted by the Trou aux Biches Beachcomber Golf Resort & Spa in Mauritius on 9 October 2021.
Penang’s historic 130-year-old house has received multiple awards for its heritage restoration and boutique hotel services, but this new honour shines a bright light on tourism as it tentatively reopens after nearly two years of wallowing in the pandemic’s aftermath.
The hotel and heritage site reopened with strict adherence to Malaysian Ministry of Health-mandated standard operating procedures, as well as additional measures including UV-C sanitisation and San Air purification and disinfection in its rooms and eating areas.
Despite their past achievements, in 2021, The Blue Mansion saw the addition of two restored 100-year-old shop lots for short-term rental, known as Town Houses by The Blue Mansion, located a stone’s throw from the main house, as well as the opening of Cafe Mangga within the grounds of the mansion itself.
The mansion also launched a virtual tour via the Smart Guide app, allowing visitors from all over the world to take a customised tour of the site from the comfort of their own home.
As visitors return to the mansion for the daily guided tour, a luxury heritage hotel stay, or a meal, The Blue Mansion has more plans in the works, ranging from opera and dinner evenings with the George Town Festival and the Kuala Lumpur City Opera to the unveiling of a heritage luxury extension to the mansion’s current accommodation offerings.
