It’s time to celebrate Malaysian food, fashion, films, and books with the KLWKND Festival, part of Art In The City (AITC 2021), which runs from 25 to 28 November. The festival aims to bring people back together after 18 months of lockdown misery. Performances, pop-up markets, walking tours, and lots more are in store for those who visit, and were designed to capture the bustling spirit of an ever-changing city of Kuala Lumpur (KL).
AITCS 2021 is a three-month initiative organised by Malaysia’s Cultural Economy Development Agency (Cendana), and is running from 14 October to 28 December.
What to look forward to
A preview of Opera Serikandi Nusantara, a modern operatic production, will be a highlight of the festival. Its plot is based on a children’s book that tells the stories of 11 mythical Malay warrior women through drawings.
The performance will take place at the city’s famous Panggung Bandaraya theatre hall, which opened in 1904, and will provide a sneak peek at a work in progress conceptualised by Tazul Tajuddin, dean and associate professor of composition at Universiti Teknologi Mara’s college of music (Mara University of Technology). His work contains some of the top soloists in the country as well as the university’s chamber choir.
Meanwhile, Raziman Sarbini’s Art of Dance will explore the multiple applications of bamboo and the influence it wields in the politics of the human body in the same location. The piece uses canes to represent pain as a form of punishment to maintain justice.
Events will take place in eight central venues, with their locations labelled using colloquial phrases such as disini, disitu, and sinilah (here, there, and over here).
