Who doesn’t love carbs? I know I do, and the relationship I have with carbs is complicated, but at the end of it all, I choose carbs every day. Next to rice, bread is probably my favourite type of carbs, and lucky me, because, in the Klang Valley, there is no shortage of bakeries.

Perfect for more than just giving us sustenance, bread can be appreciated during any meal — breakfast, lunch, or dinner, which makes it one of the more versatile foods. Though I have to say not all bread is the same; some are better than others. How do I know? Well, I’ve taken it upon myself to scour for some of the best bakeries in Petaling Jaya, and here is what I found.

1. Universal Bakehouse

What was once an old school laundromat is now one of the best bakeries in the Petaling Jaya (PJ) district, known as Universal Bakehouse. Located in Damansara Kim, this small but humble bakery is best known for its sourdough bread. They also offer a wide range of baked goods, including scones, brioche, cookies, and cakes! There are cookies too!

2. Dou Dou Bake

This famed bakery needs no introduction, as I’m sure you’ve seen it pop up on your Instagram feed. This boutique cafe opened its doors after our first national lockdown and since then has been stealing locals’ hearts (and tummies) with its simple but charming interior. Expect your usual suspects of dough here with their sourdough, danish pastries, buns, croissants, and more.

3. Bröom Artisan Bakery

Its exposed brick walls and bare cement backdrop, peppered with plants amidst its setting, make Bröom a soothing space to visit — the interior gives off Scandanavian influence, but enough about the looks. Let’s talk about their bread, and boy is it worth talking about.

You can expect all sorts of carby goodness here, from savoury to sweet. I highly recommend their country sourdough if you want to take something back with you (besides all the pastries available). Think of all the things you could whip up with it!

4. Flakes

Looking for some serious melt-in-your-mouth buttery goodness? Give Flakes’ fluffy croissants a try. Made of French flour and butter, the texture and flavour are unique and not something you’ll find easily.

The world is your oyster in croissant flavours at Flakes too! Take your pick from almond, matcha, hazelnut, or Oreo. And if you’re not counting calories, have them all! But, we’ve got to say, you must try their most famous one — the Pistachio Croissant. If you’re wise, like me, you will pair it with a cup (or two) of joe.

5. Xiao by Crustz

A collaboration between pastry chef Koh Xiao-Ly and her sister resulted in this humble and charming little cafe. The baker is most well-known for her French-inspired petit gâteu, and honestly, all the creations by the team look too beautiful to eat. But, of course, you should because the desserts here are to-die-for!

To keep things interesting, exciting, and challenging for themselves, the team over at Xiao by Crustz change the menu from time to time, so keep up with their seasonal creations on their socials.

6. Touche Pastries & More

You can almost miss Touche Pastries & More if you’re driving past the road it sits on. I would never have found it if it wasn’t for my random lunch at Decanter restaurant, which is right next door to this cafe. Upon entry and searching for coffee, I immediately loved the sleek black and grey decor, that exude a warm vibe — fitting since I walked in on a lovely rainy day!

While I recommend their pastries on offer (and I promise both the sweet and savoury will satiate your cravings), you can also give their breakfast, lunch, and dinner menu a go if you’re feeling up for a full-blown meal.

7. One Half

While One Half is more known as the place to go for fantastic coffee than a bakery, I feel like their pastries are worth raving about. The cafe’s interior certainly translates how seriously coffee is taken here, so expect a good brew each time you order.

Carb lovers, rejoice. This place has got it all — croissants, buns, canelé, sandwiches, sourdough, and then some. If you’re thinking of bringing these goodies home, order up the Baker’s Choice, an assortment box of nine, perfect for sharing or bingeing. The Lotus Biscoff Sea Salt bun is so good!

8. Provisions

A bakery and coffee shop with an incredibly Instagram-worthy exterior. Provisions’ terracotta walls remind me of a beautiful colourway of a lululemon dress! But I digress. Here, expect all that a bakery would serve like hot cross buns, sourdough, Japanese milk bread, and have I mentioned how delicious their French toasts are? I’m such a sucker for Frech toast, especially when drizzled with honey or jam. Before you leave, take home a jar of homemade kaya with you!

9. Petiteserie Bakery & Cafe

Although Petiteserie Bakery & Cafe has only been here since the end of 2022, they are by no means a newcomer in the baking world. Janice Siew, the founder of Petiteserie, has been supplying baked goods to cafes in the Klang Valley, in addition to an online delivery service catering to adoring fans. Our Sub-Editor herself says the scones here are unbelievably tasty and worth every Ringgit.

Petiteserie only uses pure butter in their bakes and makes sure to stay away from nasty artificial flavourings. They also have a hot food menu at the cafe for those who need a main to pair with their favourite pastries!

10. LAVIE Boulangerie

Previously known as Bakerry La Artisan Boulangerie, this neighbourhood bakery recently rebranded itself as LAVIE Boulangerie, but with the same great pastries. Their cruffins are a signature item, so If you’re popping by here, definitely give them a try.

It’s a nice spot for teatime hangouts, and the only trouble you’ll have is choosing which pastry to fill your belly with!
