Though it’s been around for a long time in Malaysia, social media shows rising interest in this sport once again. Some may consider it an extreme sport, especially when done outdoors – but any form of climbing can be pretty therapeutic; let’s not forget the countless benefits to this sport.
There are two ways rock-climbing can be categorised: Bouldering, a form of free climbing performed without any harness, has a reputation for being challenging; and roping, climbing while supported by a rope and a belayer, the person controlling the ropes threaded through.
Some of the benefits of this sport include confidence building, better problem-solving skills, improved strength and balance, and of course, burning calories. So, if this sounds like something you’d like to do, hit any one of these climbing gyms the next time you’re in Penang.
HangOut Climbing Gym, The Palazzia
HangOut Climbing Gym opened its doors in April 2019 and is a great place to explore both bouldering and top-roping with the guidance of experienced instructors. The space itself is relatively small compared to some of the larger ones in Malaysia, but plenty of challenges await all levels of climbers here.
The routes to be scaled will keep you occupied for at least half a day, and there are two branches to choose from in Penang: One is located at The Palazzia in Gelugor, the other at Metro Avenue in Jelutong.

Coaching is also available for first-time climbers, where you will be taught the proper techniques to ensure optimum performance and safety. The coaching also helps you go through the basic rules as well.
