It’s been a long time since I made my way to the East Coast of Malaysia, where Terengganu sits. Known for its famed islands and fishing villages, Terengganu also boasts some of the most crystal-clear waters in Malaysia.

Being born and bred in Malaysia, I’m somewhat ashamed to say that I’ve not done much exploration of my own country. Only in the last few years did I really discover Melaka, Desaru, Langkawi, and now Terengganu for the beauty that they are. And what better accommodation to tuck away in than the 5-star Tanjong Jara Resort?

Here’s how I spent 48 hours with one of my best girlfriends to recharge my mind, body, and soul at Tanjong Jara Resort:

Not one for long road trips, the journey to Tanjong Jara Resort had my anxiety levels a little on the high side. Luckily for me, I had a friend in tow who loved being behind the wheel, which only meant one thing for me—being the passenger princess!

The drive from Petaling Jaya to the resort took us about four hours and this was us adhering to speed limits, and making two pit stops along the way. Overall, the ride was stress-free and didn’t seem to be all that long.

If you’re not a fan of driving long distances, there is an option of flying into Kuala Terengganu Airport, which is an hour’s drive away from the resort.

What greeted us once we arrived at the resort was lush greenery and an authentically, luxurious kampung setting. I mean, the resort did win the prestigious Aga Khan Award for Architecture after all. While the resort’s Malay-palace-inspired exterior is much to admire, I especially loved the expansive gardens found in just about every corner.

If you’ve ever been to any YTL property, you’ll know that they don’t do things halfway. The resort is equipped with two pools – one for adults only and the other being child-friendly, three restaurant options, two tennis courts, a fully-equipped gym, and best of all, an award-winning spa.

Taking inspiration from 17th-century Malay palaces, the resort’s accommodation offerings are unique and beautiful, from outside in. The Bumbung Room is situated on the top floor of a double-storey unit and offers a calming view of the resort’s landscaped gardens. The Bumbung Sea View Room is similar to the Bumbung Rooms in terms of size and interior decor, but it overlooks the breathtaking South China Sea.

There are also the Serambi Rooms and Serambi Sea View Rooms, which are both placed on the ground floor of a double-storey unit and bear style similarities with the Bumbung Rooms. Additionally, each Serambi Room features a partially sheltered verandah overlooking the tropical gardens.

Perhaps the most luxurious accommodation choice of all is The House of Terengganu, a secluded one-bedroom villa with its own private pool, where guests can truly unwind in a tranquil sanctuary with regal interiors and a lush garden enveloping it.

Our choice of stay during the trip was the Bumbung Room, which was super spacious for a party of two. The room even had an extra bed, perfect for families with little ones, a reading nook, and two working desks. The bathrooms, complete with his and her sinks, a vanity table, bathtub, and standalone shower, make getting ready such a joy.

At Tanjong Jara Resort, the focus of the menu is mostly on local flavours, and if you’re a foodie who loves seafood, this is the resort to be at. There are three dining options to choose from:

Di Atas Sungei: When translated to English, the name of the restaurant means ‘Above The River’, which is where it’s located. With no menu, guests can entrust Chef Ann to walk them through the dishes served. Guests can also enjoy a breakfast buffet here every morning, where the spread ranges from classic Western favourites to local flavours that will have you coming back for seconds and thirds.

Nelayan: For an all-day dining experience by the shores of South China Sea, guests can opt for meals at Nelayan. Choose from Western and Asian selections but I highly suggest ordering their version of the beloved Terengganu dish, Nasi Dagang. It’s full of flavour and the fish is cooked to perfection that it almost melts in your mouth. For dinner, fresh seafood is available and if you’re a fan of lobsters, this seaside restaurant is the perfect place to be.

Teratai Terrace: Located near the ‘adults-only’ pool and overlooking the greenery that surrounds the resort, Teratai Terrace offers guests lighter bites like salads and local desserts for lunch. In the evening, indulge in yakiniku or steamboat, depending on what you’re in the mood for. Pair your dining experience with a selection of wines and cocktails.

I would never call a getaway relaxing without a full-on spa session, which is what we treated ourselves to. Spa Village with its quiet but grand entrance, invites guests into its serene complex to experience relaxation like never before. I’m not kidding, this therapy centre is impressive, with its garden, pool, and services.

Their menu has more than enough traditional treatments to choose from. Take your pick from head-to-toe massages, hair treatments, facials, and much more. While I was there, I opted for the Urutan Gamelan, a traditional Malay message focusing on the healing powers of deep tissue massage. Having my energy points stimulated and paired together with aromatic body oil, I was sent into a state of rejuvenation.

The Ikal Mayang is also another treatment worth opting for. A Malay hair treatment practised long ago by royal princesses, the combination of coconut oil, rice paddy stalks, and panda leaves will leave your tresses looking glossy! Arguably, the most unique part about this spa was the relaxing flower bath one receives before any one of their treatments.

Perhaps one of the most unique offerings at Tanjong Jara is the Kampung Sucimurni Style, where teatime at the resort invites all guests to experience the Malay way of life. From food stalls offering delicious local flavours and kuih-muih to traditional games that bring travellers together, the resort’s seafront garden truly comes alive. This experience is only available on Saturdays, so be sure to book your stay during weekends if possible.

The service here is impeccable. I went with zero expectations but still couldn’t help but be amazed at how well-versed the staff were about everything and anything pertaining to the resort. The team, made up of mostly Malaysians, were extremely accommodating and willing to help.

While the resort in its entirety is impressive, to say the least, the most memorable part for me was the team at Tanjong Jara Resort, who made every experience feel so personal. Everything here ticks all the boxes for a relaxing respite, and if you’re looking for a hideaway retreat on the East Coast, this resort is the perfect place to do so.
