New flight routes from Kuala Lumpur to Doha, Bahrain, and London are set to add flexibility to long-haul options and smoother global connections. These recent expansions from Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia X will significantly enhance travel from Southeast Asia to Europe and the Middle East, giving flyers more confidence, convenience, and the freedom to plan journeys on their own terms.

Starting 30 June 2026, Malaysia Airlines will operate three daily non-stop flights between Kuala Lumpur and Doha, increasing the route to 21 flights weekly. The expansion reflects strong demand across Asia and the Middle East.

The route connects Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) with Doha’s world-class hub, Hamad International Airport. From there, passengers gain seamless access to more than 120 codeshare destinations across Europe, Africa, the Americas, and the Middle East. For Australian travellers in particular, increased frequencies into Kuala Lumpur make westbound connections easier, cutting long layovers and improving flexibility.

With three daily departures, travellers gain flexibility. Late-night flights are ideal for seamless long-haul connections into Europe, while evening departures from Kuala Lumpur make it easy to finish a full workday before heading to the airport. The added frequency also gives travellers more control over stopovers, be it for work, rest, or short cultural experiences along the way.

  • For dining or a stroll, head to the Msheireb district. It is exceptionally well-lit, features a sleek tram system, and is designed to be pedestrian-friendly, making it one of the most comfortable spots for women to explore independently after dark.

On 26 June 2026, AirAsia X will launch its new Kuala Lumpur–Bahrain–London Gatwick route. The service marks Bahrain as the airline’s first global hub and its second fifth-freedom route. The move positions Bahrain as a bridge between Southeast Asia and Europe, opening more affordable long-haul pathways for travellers across the region.

The service connects not only Malaysia but also Australia, Indonesia, and Vietnam to the Middle East and the UK. Flights arrive at London Gatwick Airport, giving travellers an alternative to Heathrow and often faster entry into central London via the Gatwick Express. Introductory fares start from RM99 one-way to Bahrain and RM199 to London, with Premium Flatbed options from RM2,999.

Zafigo Pro Tips: The Bahrain boutique connection

  • Download and use Uber or the local Bahrain Taxi app rather than hailing street cabs. It provides a digital trail of your journey, pre-fixed pricing, and driver details, giving solo explorers extra peace of mind.
  • Make a stop at the Al Jasra Handicrafts Centre. It’s a wonderful place to meet local female artisans and purchase authentic, handmade souvenirs like traditional baskets and textiles directly from the makers.
  • If your flight aligns with a Friday, experience the famous Bahraini brunch. It is a social cornerstone here; booking a spot at a reputable hotel provides a safe, lively environment to enjoy local and international cuisine.
  • The capital city, Manama, offers some of the island nation’s best parties, with clubs hosting international DJs on the regular, and pubs offering everything from live music to karaoke and quiz nights.

Zafigo Pro Tips: The London Gatwick advantage

  • Opt for the Gatwick Express to reach central London. It is a non-stop service to Victoria Station, which is a major, well-staffed hub. This is often less overwhelming than navigating the multiple lines and crowds at Heathrow during peak hours.
  • Use a contactless card or your phone for the “Tube.” To ensure you never feel lost, use the Citymapper app—it provides “Step-Free” route options and tells you exactly which carriage to board to be closest to the safest, most well-lit station exits.
  • If you have a few hours to kill, walk the South Bank. It is a highly populated, scenic route along the Thames with plenty of open-air markets and cafes, offering a beautiful (and very safe) introduction to the city’s skyline.
