Uniqlo Malaysia is a company committed to raising awareness of environmental issues and aims to inspire action to make the world a better place. As part of Uniqlo’s ‘JOIN: The Power of Clothing’ campaign, the fashion brand recently organised river clean-ups and encouraged customers to be active in environmental sustainability activities.
Together with Reimagine Plastic by Hara Makers and Alliance of River Three, Uniqlo Malaysia recruited 60 volunteers to clean up river pollution at Sungai Keroh and Taman Melawati River Three Park and contribute to marine biodiversity protection in the Klang Valley. Almost 200kgs of waste, including single-use plastics and fabrics, was collected by the volunteers throughout this initiative.
Uniqlo’s river clean-up initiative is intended to improve the capacity and efficiency of waste collection in the Klang Valley to have a positive impact on the local community. It is hoped that this activity raises awareness of environmental sustainability and the importance of clean rivers to conserve precious water sources.
“It was an enlightening experience to have worked together with large corporations like Uniqlo for a greener environment. We are certain that through these initiatives, more people are now aware of the importance of preserving our environment, not just for ourselves, but also for the future generations,” said Lee Yoon of Reimagine Plastic by Hara Makers.
“Among the waste we collect through our activities, we find many single-use plastics, including plastic tags that can be found on apparel. We applaud Uniqlo for being the first in the industry to join our mission, as part of their wider actions to make a positive impact on worldwide environmental issues,” adds Kennedy Michael, founder of The Alliance of River Three.
Doraemon has also joined Uniqlo as a global sustainability ambassador for their ‘JOIN: The Power of Clothing’ campaign. Under the ‘Doraemon Sustainability Mode’, Uniqlo is selling products made of recycled polyester. When customers purchase a Fluffy Fleece Jacket, the parent company of UNIQLO, will donate USD1 (approximately RM4.55) for each item to the Nippon Foundation to support initiatives to reduce marine waste. Not only are these jackets environmentally friendly, but they are very cosy and cute too, and available in many different colours to suit everyone.
