There’s no such thing as receiving a “Fun Mum” award. But when your child gives you endless hugs, kisses, and thank-yous throughout a weekend together, you know you must have done something right.

Somewhere between work, school runs, and daily routines, I had become a little too familiar with “Hurry up!” and “I’m tired. We’ll play later.” So, without hesitation, my little family of three – me, Hubby, and our five-year-old daughter, Eiman – packed our bags and drove from Kuala Lumpur to Kuantan for a three-day, two-night stay at the newly renovated Swiss-Grand Beach Resort Kuantan.

What we liked:

  1. A beautiful stay with calming spaces and camera-ready corners.
  2. Everything within easy reach, with the pool, kids’ club, gym, spa, coffee shop, and beach.
  3. Fun for all ages, from ATV rides and horse riding to batik painting and kuih making.
  4. Thoughtful little touches, like a padded sejadah waiting in the room.
  5. Secukup rasa dim sum, mocktails, breakfast buffets, and BBQs by the beach.

I wanted proper family time without a packed itinerary, and the resort made that easy. Here are 10 family-friendly wins from our stay.

1. A beautifully curated space to help everyone unwind

After such a long drive, stepping into Swiss-Grand Beach Resort Kuantan’s bright, garden-inspired lobby felt like a little reset in itself. We were greeted with warm smiles from the staff, while my eyes immediately went to the coastal details: honey timber, woven rattan, and subtle ocean-teal accents.

Eiman, meanwhile, had already made a beeline for the lobby balcony, where the view opened up to the tropical gardens, swimming pools, and Pantai Balok. We settled at The Deli with coconut water in hand, taking in the view before properly starting our holiday.

For me, the beauty was more than just photo-worthy. There’s something calming about the idea of waking up and winding down in a space that feels thoughtfully put together. Add the sea breeze, greenery, and impressively clean common areas, restaurants, and kids’ spaces, and I was sold. Oh, and the view is spectacular in the evening too.

2. A comfortable room for proper family rest

A fun mum needs her rest too. Dads, of course, will happily agree.

Personally, a comfortable room can make or break a hotel stay. Our Premier Deluxe Sea-Facing 43-square-metre room ticked the important boxes: a king-size bed, armchairs, a balcony, a fridge, a TV, and enough space for a little one to wander around.

The bathroom space was generous, although there was no bathtub. But with an entire pool area waiting outside, I wasn’t complaining. A good-sized balcony came in handy for hanging our wet, sandy clothes, which, with a child in tow, is never a bad thing. I also appreciated having a thick, padded sejadah in the room. Paired with wooden floors underfoot, it was a small but thoughtful touch that added to the comfort of Muslim guests.

The view overlooked the pool and Pantai Balok. We didn’t spot any monkeys during our stay, thank God, but you might get lucky with a Rhinoceros Hornbill instead. For bigger families, this room may feel a little snug, even with an extra bed. I’d suggest looking at the Family Room, Ocean Serenity Family Room, or Executive Sea-Facing Family Suite instead.

3. A Kids’ Club that gives parents a little breathing space

Meet Young Citizens of the World Kids’ Club, an imaginative space with tree-canopy ceilings, interactive play zones, and plenty to keep little ones occupied. The space is huge!

I loved that it’s right next to the glass-fronted gymnasium, so parents can squeeze in some me-time while keeping the kids close. There’s a movie room, reading corner, mini playground, PlayStation corner, colouring area, and plenty of books and board games, including traditional favourites such as congkak and kerem.

My little Picasso naturally gravitated towards the art corner, where a huge blackboard lets kids draw freely. And when she was ready for something different, we joined the batik painting class for RM25 per design before making onde-onde together.

Operating hours: 8:00am–9:00pm

4. A Kids’ Pool that keeps little ones happily busy

Three slides at the Kids’ Splash Pool? This resort really knows how to win little hearts. I lost count after about 20 trips up and down, and by the end, she was confidently going down the slides on her own and making new friends along the way. I also liked that the tipping bucket sits to the side rather than right in the middle. Eiman is still wary of bucket water, so she could ease into it at her own pace.

There’s a jacuzzi and adults’ pool nearby too, so parents can get their own pool time while the little ones splash away. Just note that there’s no lifeguard on duty, so parents will need to keep a close eye on their children.

Operating hours: 7:00am–7:30pm
Location: Outdoor Freeform Swimming Pool

5. A breakfast buffet that makes mornings easier

As much as I love bedrotting on holiday, waking up to a good breakfast buffet is hard to resist. It’s one of my favourite parts of a hotel stay, and thankfully, even my picky little eater gave this resort’s spread the thumbs-up.

Eiman happily helped herself to Honey Stars from the kids’ section, while Hubby and I went for the Malaysian breakfast favourites. There was also a farm-to-table salad spread, Singapore mee hoon, pastries, porridge, and plenty more from the halal-certified selection. As the Malays say, semuanya secukup rasa (everything just right).

And the best part? The restaurant is open all day, so the breakfast buffet isn’t the only reason to stop by.

Operating hours: 6:30am–10:30am
Location: Garden Terrace Coffee House

6. Plenty of food without leaving the resort

You know what makes a family holiday even easier? We could eat well without leaving the resort. Our favourite was the Muslim-friendly The Blossom Chinese Restaurant, where we had both lunch and dinner on our first day. Twice in one day? Yes, I’m that person. Once I’m hooked, I need it again.

The restaurant is cosy, with garden views and plenty of natural light, but the food was the real la crème de la crème. Everything arrived hot, crunchy, and flavourful. Eiman had seafood fried rice, while Hubby and I went for the dim sum, including the signature charcoal bun, seaweed roll, and steamed siu mai. The little details made dining with a child easier too, with children’s cutlery and baby chairs available.

For day-to-night dining options, just head to the artisanal coffee and pastries at The Deli, or drinks and mocktails at Malibu.

7. A spa session to remind mum she gets to have fun too (in her own way)

By day one, my body was already asking for a breather. So, I followed the pebble path into the greenery and found my way to Soulé Spa & Retreat, a peaceful pavilion surrounded by the gentle sound of the ocean breeze.

For one glorious hour, I switched off with a full-body massage. After days of carrying a stiff body around like a broken car overdue for servicing, I clearly needed it. The massage therapist worked through all the knots, and by the end, I felt like someone had finally pressed the reset button. RM298 well spent, if you ask me.

A hot cup of tea after the massage, while soaking up the gentle breeze, was the cherry on top. I highly recommend adding this to your itinerary. After all, a little me-time never hurts, especially for the person who usually organises everyone else’s time.

Operating hours: 11:00am–11:00pm

8. A beach day where everyone can have their own fun (but together)

When it comes to a beach holiday, some people love the sunrise and sunset views. I do too, but I have a little holiday ritual: stopping to take in the view before heading down to the beach. With the sea breeze and sound of waves getting louder with every step, it felt like the perfect start to a slow afternoon.

Now, Eiman isn’t exactly a nature girl. Just like moi. She loves the beach but is terrified of crabs, yet still insisted on building a sandcastle. So, I parked myself on a beach lounger nearby, close enough to keep an eye on her and any six-legged visitors.

For families who are more adventurous, there’s horse riding, ATV rides, seaside archery, beach volleyball, and mini football. If you prefer to take it slow, there are shaded hammocks, plenty of space to play, a kite-flying activity, plus tennis and pickleball courts nearby.

The fun doesn’t stop there. At night, the beach comes alive with a BBQ spread by the shore, live oceanfront grilling, and a Saturday night fire performance. It was Eiman’s first fire show, and she was completely mesmerised. Safe to say, the adults were pretty enchanted too.

9. A family activity that gives back at Pantai Balok

One morning, instead of heading straight for the pool, we decided to do something a little different: a beach clean-up at Pantai Balok.

We joined the OSK Beach Combing (COMB-AT) initiative, picking up litter along the shoreline and helping with waste separation. The session covers around 1.4 kilometres of shoreline, with the collected waste sorted, weighed, and recorded. It was a simple activity, but I liked that Eiman could see first-hand how we can all play a part in keeping the beach we enjoy clean.

Any guests staying at the resort can join the initiative too. Just check the programme schedule provided by the resort for upcoming beach clean-up sessions.

10. A little shop for holiday finds

Well, yes, “resortcore” is still a thing. I somehow left Swiss-Grand Beach Resort Kuantan with not one, but two soft toys: the hotel’s turtle and hornbill mascots. Shocking, I know. *rolls eyes*.

But the resort’s convenience shop is more than just a place for last-minute essentials. I had a browse and found batik-inspired clothes, accessories, and traditional Malaysian games, including pieces from local artisans.

It felt like a nice way to take a piece of Kuantan home with us.

A family holiday that let me be the Fun Mum again

Three days and two nights later, I realised I had stopped rushing.

We swam, painted, played, walked along the beach, ate well, and, yes, I even squeezed in a massage. Eiman was happy, Ikmal and I were rested, and we simply enjoyed being together.

For 72 hours, I wasn’t thinking about work, the next task, or the next school run. I was just being present and having fun with my family. Would I come back? Absolutely.

For families looking for a Kuantan beach resort that makes it easy to balance kids’ activities, family time, good food, and a little downtime for parents, Swiss-Grand Beach Resort Kuantan offers plenty to keep everyone occupied without needing to leave the property.
