Ormond Group has opened Ormond Sandakan, a new waterfront hotel overlooking Sandakan Bay in Sabah. Located within walking distance of the town’s heritage centre, markets, and harbourfront, the hotel puts travellers close to Sandakan’s local sights while offering a convenient base for exploring the wildlife attractions beyond the city.
Sea views with a Bornean touch
The hotel offers 299 rooms and suites, including connecting family rooms and larger suites, with sea views overlooking Sandakan Bay. Interiors use natural textures, muted tones, and local materials, drawing subtle inspiration from Sabah’s landscape while keeping the overall design contemporary and understated.
Its waterfront location places travellers within walking distance of Sandakan’s heritage town centre, harbourfront, and local markets. That makes it convenient for visitors looking to explore the city’s everyday side, from morning market visits to walks along the coast, without having to travel far from the hotel.
Four dining options under one roof
Ormond Sandakan has four food and drink venues. Pietro serves Mediterranean-inspired dishes including seafood and handmade pasta with Bornean ingredients, while Rasa focuses on Malaysian favourites incorporating Sabahan produce and flavours. Poolside venue Bayu offers drinks and light bites overlooking the sea, while Rise serves the hotel’s breakfast buffet with a mix of Malaysian and international dishes.
A base for exploring Sabah’s wildlife
Sandakan is best known as a gateway to some of Sabah’s major wildlife destinations. Guests can use the hotel as a starting point for visits to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, where rescued orangutans are rehabilitated before returning to the wild.
Travellers can also head to Turtle Islands Park, known for its sea turtle conservation programmes, or travel towards the Kinabatangan River, one of Sabah’s best-known wildlife areas and home to species including proboscis monkeys, hornbills, and Bornean pygmy elephants.
Space for weddings, meetings and events
The property also has eight event spaces, including a 620-square-metre ballroom with capacity for up to 800 guests. The venues cater to everything from weddings and private celebrations to conferences and corporate events.
Ormond Sandakan is within walking distance of Sandakan’s heritage town centre, while attractions including Sepilok, Turtle Islands Park, and the Kinabatangan River are accessible from the hotel.
