Club Med Borneo in Kuala Penyu brings sustainable luxury and all-inclusive travel to Sabah, blending nature, culture and immersive experiences.
Club Med is bringing a major new addition to Malaysia’s travel scene. Set to open in November this year, Club Med Borneo, Kota Kinabalu will be the brand’s second resort in the country and its first large-scale, sustainably built property in Sabah.
Reservations officially open on 24 March 2026, and if early interest is any indication, this is one Sabah resort debut that will draw attention quickly. Located along the largely untouched coastline of Kuala Penyu, around 90 minutes from Kota Kinabalu International Airport, the resort offers a rare mix of nature, culture and all-inclusive comfort.
Where Architecture Meets Ancestry
The design draws directly from Sabah’s heritage, with a central timber pavilion inspired by the traditional Rumah Rungus longhouse. The result feels grounded and intentional rather than overly polished.
Water features, forest backdrops and warm ambient lighting bring the space to life, especially at sunset when the structure glows in soft amber tones. It’s a setting that naturally encourages a slower, more present pace of travel.
A Stay Designed for Every Kind of Traveller
The resort features 400 rooms, including 39 Exclusive Collection Suites for those seeking a more private, elevated stay.
For an even quieter escape, the Mutiara Exclusive Collection area offers a “resort within a resort” experience, complete with its own pool, lounge and bar.
Kids’ Club facilities cater to ages from four months to teens, while adults can ease into their own rhythm — whether by the infinity pool or in a forest spa chalet.
Dining That Reflects the Region and Beyond

Food plays a central role in the experience. The Alam serves as the main dining hub, offering both international and local flavours across multiple live cooking stations.
For a more intimate setting, The Laut offers a refined dining experience, while The Pasir acts as the resort’s social hub, where cocktails and conversation carry into the evening.
Beyond the Beach: Culture, Nature, and Adventure
What sets this destination apart is what lies beyond the resort.
Guests can explore Sabah’s culture through hands-on workshops, from pottery to cooking, or watch traditional performances under the night sky.
Excursions extend the experience further, from cultural visits to Mari-Mari Cultural Village to island-hopping and snorkelling around Pulau Tiga, as well as river safaris where wildlife sightings may include hornbills and proboscis monkeys.
Sustainability That Goes Beyond Buzzwords

Sustainability here goes beyond surface-level efforts.
The resort is being developed in line with BREEAM standards and aims for Green Globe certification once operational. Initiatives include reducing single-use plastics, improving energy efficiency and preserving surrounding mangroves and coastal ecosystems.
There is also a strong educational component, with programmes designed to help guests better understand Sabah’s natural environment.
