So, you’ve got a friend/friends from overseas visiting, and you want them to have the best possible experience of Kuala Lumpur (KL). It’s your city, and there’s more to it than the Petronas Twin Towers. But, what else shows the city in its best light? Here’s a list of our favourite things to do in KL with visitors that blend iconic sights with authentic, local spice.

Definitely one that’s on the beaten path, but there’s something to be said about Kuala Lumpur’s vibrant cultural haven. We’re talking heritage shophouses, colourful temples, and some of the best representations of Malaysia’s incredible cuisine, all found in one district.

Here’s what to do while you’re here:

  • Duck into Pucks Coffee for a brew to kick-start your day.
  • Relive 1960s KL at Kwai Chai Hong.
  • Let your friends experience the taste of traditional Nyonya cuisine at Old China Cafe, or sample some super delish, budget-friendly nasi campur (rice with various side dishes) at Dilla Restaurant.
  • Have a wander through REXKL and work your way through their labyrinthine bookstore, impressive digital art gallery (REXPERIENCE), curated vintage goods, delectable food hall, and more.
  • Hop over to Central Market, the historical icon and centre for Malaysian culture, art, and craft.
  • Do the Colonial Walk near the River of Life and check out some of Kuala Lumpur’s most notable historical landmarks.
  • Round it off with cocktails at Penrose KL, ranked No. 8 on Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2024 and No. 98 on the World’s 50 Best Bars 2024.

P.S. Here are some extra ideas for walking tours in KL and street food to introduce to your friend(s).

Beautifully shaded trails, native trees, and birds chirping. The big city vibes melt away as soon as you step into Taman Tugu, making it a breath of fresh air for both you and your visiting friend(s). And it’s conveniently located right by Perdana Botanical Gardens, another gorgeous green stroll.

Mornings are cooler and quieter; don’t forget to pack water and insect repellent, wear proper shoes, and bring a picnic of local delights (nasi lemak, perhaps?).

Want more nature options? Here’s a list of our favourites.

Everyone has their preferred pasar malam (night market), but for a lively sensory experience, we’d say Taman Connaught. Being the longest night market in Malaysia, it’s a Wednesday-only event that stretches over 2km with 700+ stalls of street food, fashion, and everything in between. It’s a full-on local experience and every foodie’s wet dream. Wear comfy shoes and save your appetite. Parking is pure chaos, so get there early, or take a Grab.

Other street foodie experiences worth introducing to your guests:

Calm, quiet, collected, and refreshingly uncrowded, Ilham Gallery exhibits some of the best contemporary art in Malaysia. It’s a great way to add a cultural stop between all the face-stuffing. Entry is free, and the gift shop is full of exquisite locally-made products that your guests will love.

Other art spots worth a visit:

Okay, so it might give tourist-trappy, but by golly, look at that view! Helipad is 100% worth it for the golden hour skyline. Head up a little earlier to grab a seat and watch the city light up for nightfall.

Visiting friends won’t know what hit ‘em when they step into one of JBR Bundle’s gargantuan warehouses of secondhand items. KL’s thrift scene is pretty big, with spots like Jalan Jalan Japan and 2nd Street, but JBR Bundle is a shoo-in, offering everything from retro tees to secondhand sneakers, and even sports equipment at very reasonable prices. Great for scoring budget-friendly style and one-of-a-kind finds, your friends will thank you for bringing them to a digger’s paradise.

Alternatively, bring them to Amcorp Mall for the weekend flea market that’s been running since 1998. The normally quiet, old-school mall transforms into a bustling bazaar packed with stalls selling all types of things, from memorabilia to vinyl records, vintage items, and quirky collectables.

While not exactly in KL, we’ve got a list of awesome farm restaurants not too far out of town that offer the true farm-to-table experience. Check it out here.

Your guest(s) will go home feeling like they wouldn’t have had such an incredible experience of Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia had it not been for their insider connection (you).
