At Zafigo, we’ve always believed that the best travel advice comes from real women who are out there exploring the world. And so, we started Zafigo Unfiltered—a bi-weekly Q&A on our Instagram Stories where we ask our followers about their travel habits, preferences, and insider tips. It’s a space to connect, learn, and share.
Our latest question?
“What’s one item you always pack for your travels and why?”
The answers came in quickly, and as always, they were thoughtful, clever, and full of the kind of real-life advice you’d only get from a friend. We pulled out the ones we found most interesting. Some are tried-and-true staples; others might just surprise you. Whether you’re looking for brand recommendations or curious to discover a new travel hack, there’s probably something here worth adding to your packing list.
1. Sunglasses

Why: As common as this one may be, many of us do sometimes forget about them. They’re practical, stylish, and essential for long, sunny days and sleepy (i.e., I went too hard last night) eyes.
Try: Kaca-Kaca for chic yet affordable frames or Ray-Ban for timeless quality. For travel, polarised lenses like Sunday Shade’s Classics are both budget-friendly and adventure-proof.
2. Portable umbrella

Why: Let’s be honest, a lot of us are puteri lilins and caps or hats sometimes don’t fit the outfit. On the flip side, unexpected rain can ruin more than just your hair.
Try: Uniqlo’s UV Protection Compact Umbrella (ultra-compact, wind-resistant) or Muji’s Compact Folding Umbrella—both are light enough to forget about until you need them.
3. Empty wallet

Why: An intentionally empty wallet is a smart way to travel lighter and safer. Whether you’re heading to a destination where card payments are king queen or you’re planning to fill it with local currency and receipts as you go, starting with an empty wallet keeps things organised. It’s also a subtle anti-theft strategy.
Try: Bellroy’s Folio Wallet for slim, RFID-protected compartments, or Christy Ng’s Sevyn Small Wallet for something elegant and compact that still fits the essentials.
4. Noise-cancelling headphones/earbuds

Why: Airplanes, crying babies (sorry, mums), and noisy streets are no match for peace and playlists.
Try: Sony WH-1000XM5 or Bose QuietComfort Earbuds II for elite noise cancellation. For budget-friendly options, check out JBL Wave Buds True Wireless Earbuds.
5. Activewear

Why: Comfort, flexibility, and being ready for spontaneous hikes, yoga, or long layovers.
Try: lululemon’s Align Pants, LIVLOLA’s bra tanks, or Uniqlo AIRism for inclusive sizing and extra comfort.
6. Thai inhaler (a.k.a. Ya Dom)

Why: Whether it’s motion sickness, headaches, or fatigue, this tiny tube is magic. And BLACKPINK’s Lisa swears by it.
Try: Poy Sian — available at most Thai convenience stores and online. Or the ever-popular Hong Thai Traditional Herbal Inhaler. Trust us, it’s a cult favourite for a reason.
7. Deodorant

Why: Because we’re likely going to be out and about most days, and nobody wants to feel sticky or self-conscious while on the go.
Try: Joi (natural ingredients and great scents), or the Nivea Deodorant Mini Spray — travel-sized and widely available. If you’re looking for something that’s also environmentally friendly, there’s Hygr’s Smell Be Gone Natural Refillable Deodorant.
8. UTI sachets

Why: UTIs can sneak up on you, especially during long-haul flights or dehydrated days.
Try: Ural Effervescent Granules or Eldon U-Cranberry Forte 5G for prevention. Pack a few sachets in case of emergency—your future self will thank you.
9. Himalayan salt candy

Why: It helps with nausea (think of those nasty, bumpy boat or small ferry rides), jet lag, and replenishes electrolytes.
Try: Look for Himalayan salt or ginger candies at grocery stores or pharmacies, or check out Himalaya Vajomba—a growing cult favourite here in Malaysia.
10. Vaseline Rosy Lips

Why: It’s the ultimate multitasker—all-in-one lip balm, blush, cuticle rescue, and glow-up that’s gentle on your skin.
Try: Vaseline Rosy Lips or Laneige Lip Glowy Balm in Berry if you want a more luxe option with similar results.
11. Hypochlorous acid spray

Why: It’s a game-changer for hygiene, especially when you’re navigating airports, planes, public bathrooms, or unfamiliar accommodations. Hypochlorous acid is naturally antimicrobial, so it helps soothe irritated skin and calm breakouts caused by travel stress or mask-wearing.
Try: Mario Badescu’s Repairing Facial Spray or Tower 28’s SOS Spray—both are safe for face, hands, and even wounds. Think of it as skincare meets sanitiser.
