Let’s face it; the Malaysian food scene is nothing short of amazing. Being this incredible cultural mosaic, whatever cuisine you seek, our food and beverage landscape will have it. With the year coming to a close, plenty of us are using up our free time (and annual leave) to either travel, do nothing at home, or look for new food haunts, and these spots on our list are definite must-tries.

S+I, Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur

English food is not easy to come by in Kuala Lumpur, believe it or not. For quality fish and chips, and I mean like the ones you’d find in the UK, I usually travel all the way to Singapore for some. But with S+I now on the KL food scene, I no longer have to wander too far for some good ol’ English Sunday roast and quality pies with mash.

Head Chef Simon Stevens has over 30 years of experience garnered from all over Europe, so you can be sure a plate of whatever you choose will not disappoint here.

Kooky Plate, Chow Kit

From the same team that brought you Kooky Cream, where delicious baked goods can be found, comes Kooky Plate in the heart of Kuala Lumpur. Serving breakfast and brunch in a space that’s well-lit and very trendy looking, this is the perfect haunt to start your weekend at.

Their kimchi chicken quiche is intriguing and flavourful, and the beef ramen is a must-try. There are also signature desserts like the Tau Fu Fah Cheesecake that is worth sacrificing your calorie intake for.

UpperDeck, Petaling Street

No, this restaurant is not on a ship, but it is located in the hip part of Downtown KL — specifically, Petaling Street — and pretty easy to miss if you don’t know what to look for. A contemporary take on Malaysian dishes, UpperDeck impresses patrons with offerings like Asam Pedas Seafood Bisque (I mean, come on!), Sticky Lamb Ribs, and Asam Pedas Oxtail Pasta! For dessert, treat yourself to the Coconut Parfait, a medley of ice cream (made from buah kulim), and our local mulberry fruit.
