I love doughnuts. And when I say I love them, I mean I can’t translate my feelings for this doughy goodness into words. What’s not to love? With or without holes, these versatile types of bread can be served as a sweet treat or a savoury delicacy. Gone are the days of plain ol’ Dunkin Donuts or J.Co Donuts — nowadays, home bakers or small businesses offer doughnut lovers (like myself) freshly-made ones that are uniquely flavoured.

Hot off the oven and can be delivered to wherever you are, here are some of the best places to order doughnuts from within the Klang Valley.

1. Sugar and I, Subang Jaya

Let me start this list with my ultimate favourite — Subang Jaya’s own, Sugar and I. Tucked away in the (relatively) quiet neighbourhood of SS14, it’s easy to miss this little cafe if you’re whizzing down the lane. Sugar and I may be a small dessert spot, but damn, does it pack a punch!

Offering bomboloni (stuffed doughnuts, where have you been?) that will have you addicted, it was founded by two siblings who clearly understood the assignment — that desserts aren’t a fad, and they should be done well. Their bombolini come in many flavours, Nutella and Vanilla Custard being the best (IMO).

Bombolini aren’t their only claim to fame, though, as there are plenty of Japanese choux puffs to sink your sweet tooth into and cakes as well. And, honestly, what is dessert without a side of beverage? Check out their Cold Brew White or Cold Matcha Milk. Want something even chocolatier? Sample their Salted Caramel Walnut Brownies. SO. GOOD!

2. HALO Doughnut, Petaling Jaya

Not many businesses were born during the pandemic and carried on as rules eased countrywide, but HALO Doughnut did. What started as baking for friends turned into a full-fledged flourishing business. At the encouragement of her mates, a former video producer transformed herself into a pastry chef, and she is a great one at that.

The choices here are aplenty, and if we had to suggest one thing to start your HALO Doughnut journey with, it would be a box of Baby Cinnamon Affairs. We’re talking about 10 warm and fluffy doughnuts that will elicit all sorts of sounds from those taking a bite.

Craving for something with extra softness and puffiness? Add to cart the OG Pilloughs — New Orleans-style beignets that will probably expand your waistline but bring you so much joy.

3. Basket break bakehouse, Petaling Jaya

It takes incredible self-discipline to write about all these doughnuts and not order any, and as we move on to basket break, I can’t help but wonder: “Why am I not ordering some?” Look no further if you’re looking for a dessert spot that serves cool (in appearance) and delicious doughnuts.

This sorta mom-and-pop vibe place offers ‘sourdonuts’ in six distinct flavours, and to ensure optimum serving of these fluffy babies, they are produced in small batches. Highly recommended: twice-baked s’mores.

4. Hari-Hari Dough, Damansara Perdana

These home bakers only operate on weekends, as their weekdays are taken up by their full-time jobs, but we promise that the wait is worth it. Damansara Perdana-based customers can choose from six flavours or do themselves a seriously sinful favour and order all of them! Thanks to a friend, I was able to try a couple of pieces, and I’ve got to say, ‘Pancakes’ — a beautiful shimmering marriage of maple syrup and vanilla glaze — is the one that won my heart (and stomach).

5. KLCG Confectionary, Kuala Lumpur

A hidden treasure trove in the hustle and bustle of Downtown Kuala Lumpur is none other than KLCG Confectionary. While they may not serve the traditional doughnut or bombolone, there are plenty of cronuts available, which is just another fancy doughnuts, since it’s a delicious hybrid of a croissant and doughnut.

There are six unique flavours to choose from, but keep your eyes peeled for their seasonal cronuts, which are always a treat for the tastebuds. Unconventional, but a must-try, is their Imperial Durian Cronut.
