“Press the ‘Magic’ button and ask for the special pillow”. That was the tip I received before going up to my room, and sure enough, when I tried it, a pair of plush latex pillows appeared at my door soon after. It’s a small indulgence, but one that says a lot about Hilton Kuching: intuitive, thoughtful, and designed to make your stay feel quietly elevated.

Fresh from an extensive refurbishment, the hotel feels like a grande dame that has found a new rhythm. The renovation touches every part of the property, but to me, the heart of its appeal lies in its guestrooms. Whether you choose a Deluxe Room, an Executive Room with lounge access, or one of their spacious Suites, the new design blends clean, contemporary lines with nods to Sarawak’s textures and tones. My own room overlooked the Sarawak River, where daytime views of boats passing by eventually gave way to evenings framed by the lit-up Darul Hana Bridge, glowing like a welcome home beacon.

The Hilton Kuching has also elevated its in-room experience with thoughtful little treats. On my first day, I found a trio of traditional Sarawak cakes waiting for me, a sweet nod to local heritage. On the second day, it was an assortment of chocolates to tempt me into breaking my no-late-night-snacks rule. These gestures may seem small, but they set the tone: for you to feel indulged and at ease from the moment you check in.

Food is, of course, a central part of the Hilton experience. Breakfast at River View Cafe deserves a mention not just for its variety, but for its attention to local favourites. The kolo mee here is a must. Granted, if you’re visiting a city for the first time, you’ll want to explore food options beyond the hotel, and everyone you ask will likely point you to a different “best” version of a dish. But on a morning when you’d rather stay in, the kolo mee (and Sarawak laksa, and nasi lemak) at the Hilton is worth it.

For a change of pace, the Cantonese dishes at Toh Yuen are elegant yet familiar, with some plates infused with Sarawakian flair. The Thai Style Jungle Fern “Midin”, for instance, was so good I could have devoured the entire plate myself. The Terrace, meanwhile, offers poolside dining with a laid-back, resort-like atmosphere, while The Koffee is an easygoing café where you can linger over locally roasted coffee and freshly baked cakes.

Beyond its dining venues, Hilton Kuching has also created spaces for both work and play. Families will love the newly added Kids Centre, a colourful hub of books, games, and supervised activities that make travelling with children easier. Those who can’t go a day or two without a workout (like me) or anyone hoping to balance out all the noodles and cakes (also like me) will appreciate the expanded gym. Its 24-hour access is especially practical for travellers whose routines don’t fit neatly into daylight hours. And if unwinding is more your style, there are two swimming pools to choose from: a main pool with sweeping river views and a smaller one designed for children.

General Manager Adrian Teh is as much a part of Hilton Kuching’s new chapter as the redesigned rooms and facilities. Over casual conversations during our stay, it was clear how proud he is of what the refurbishment has brought to life. He and his team’s presence is warm, approachable, and deeply rooted in making Hilton Kuching feel like home for every guest.

As inviting as Hilton Kuching is, its central location means you’re never too far from the city’s pulse. With the Sarawak River as your front yard, you can step out for an evening stroll along the Waterfront, cross the Darul Hana bridge, or wander into Carpenter Street where heritage shophouses still buzz with life.

Tourism Sarawak arranged for us to join a heritage walk led by our knowledgeable guide, Melintan, who brought Kuching’s layered history to life. From Tua Pek Kong Temple to the colonial Old Court House, every stop revealed another facet of the city’s cultural mosaic. Melintan’s anecdotes, part history lesson, part local wisdom, added depth to the sights, making the walk not just a tour but a storytelling journey.

We also ventured further out to Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, where orangutans swung effortlessly from tree to tree during feeding time. It was a reminder that nature is never too far away in Sarawak. But as much as I enjoyed these excursions, I found myself equally eager to return to Hilton’s calm embrace.

What sets Hilton Kuching apart is its ability to balance comfort with curiosity. You can spend your day discovering the city’s street food, markets, and wildlife, then return to a space that feels restorative. You can dig into kolo mee at breakfast, knowing a fine dinner awaits you at Toh Yuen. You can watch the city light up from your room’s window, or enjoy a barbecue by the pool at The Terrace.

For families, couples, or solo travellers, the hotel becomes a safe, comfortable base that encourages you to explore while always welcoming you back.

Hilton Kuching has long been a part of the city’s landscape, but with this facelift, it feels ready for a new generation of travellers. It’s not just about polished floors and updated rooms; it’s about creating a stay that reflects the city’s rhythm of discovery and rest.

Because in Kuching, curiosity takes you far. But comfort, especially here at Hilton, always brings you home.
