Spending a stopover in Abu Dhabi? Here’s a budget-friendly one-day itinerary that balances culture, architecture, and local experiences.
This winter, while booking tickets to go home for the holidays, I stumbled upon an Etihad Airways deal: stop over in Abu Dhabi for a minimum of two nights and receive a complimentary hotel stay. Even more tempting was the list of participating properties, like Shangri-La, that don’t usually come free. Why not? I thought as I booked my flights.
The UAE capital wasn’t quite what we expected. Online, Abu Dhabi often presents itself as ultra-luxurious; a city for the wealthy. While the amazing architecture and modern cityscape are very real, riding the bus from the airport revealed Abu Dhabi’s humble side: older, less flashy buildings and a city shaped as much by its heritage as its ambition.
Our time in Abu Dhabi was brief but surprisingly rich. Efficient public transport, walkable areas, and thoughtfully designed public spaces make it an ideal stopover city. If you’re short on time and travelling on a budget, here’s how to spend a well-rounded day in Abu Dhabi, with every stop less than an hour from the city centre:
Morning: Go on a sunrise walk or run along the Corniche Road
If you want to make the most of your stopover time in Abu Dhabi, waking up early for a walk or run along the Corniche Road is a great way to experience the city at its calmest.
The walking and cycling tracks in Abu Dhabi deserve a round of applause. They are well-marked, flat, and separated from roads. By foot or bike, you can easily connect to one of the tracks from your downtown hotel and make your way to the Corniche Road.
The Corniche Road is a five-mile (8-kilometre) path that stretches along the north-west shore of Abu Dhabi.
For me, running along this path was the highlight of my trip. The water along the city is a remarkable turquoise, framing pristine, soft-sand beaches beautifully. You can take in the city’s skyline while passing public fishing areas, beach cafes, and different beaches — including a ladies-only beachfront — as well as activity providers such as Abu Dhabi Parasail.
Beaches have lifeguards on duty, and some even have open-water swimming lanes. Bike and walking lanes are well-connected, making the Corniche Road a great place to appreciate how the city has invested in its public spaces.
Early Afternoon: Experience an Abu Dhabi water taxi
Not only does the city have a great metered taxi system, but it also has taxis on the water.
After your Corniche Road adventure, take a water taxi for an affordable way to appreciate the city skyline from the sea. There are several routes to choose from. If you would like to add a ride to your Corniche walk, you can take the Al Qana Marina to Yas Bay line.
Alternatively, if you plan to end your day at the Louvre Abu Dhabi and just want a quick taste of the water taxi experience, the short but scenic Marsa Mina to Louvre Abu Dhabi route is ideal.
The water taxis are sleek boats with outdoor seating at the bow. The ride offers views of islands such as Al Lulu Island, ports, skyscrapers, and beaches. It’s a wonderful way to see the city’s diversity.
To book your tickets, you can purchase them via the Abu Dhabi Maritime website or download the Al Nalia app from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
Late Afternoon: Be in awe of the architecture at Louvre Abu Dhabi
Louvre Abu Dhabi is an architectural marvel, crowned by a multi-layered dome that filters sea breeze and sunlight into the courtyard below. The design is a tribute to how light filters through the fronds of palm trees.
The museum houses an impressive collection of ancient to contemporary international art. However, perhaps its most striking feature is the building itself, set on the emerald waters of the Arabian Gulf and surrounded by angular pools. There is even a lifeguard on duty at some pools, in case visitors want to take a swim.
While many visit for the art, others come for the photographs. You’ll spot visitors dressed in glamorous outfits, posing along the catwalk-like walkways surrounded by water. The museum even has an in-house photographer who can take your photo for AED50.
If you only have one day, visiting Louvre Abu Dhabi is a must. A museum set on the sea is a rarity, and this one is unforgettable.
Tickets can be purchased online or at the museum counter. Adult tickets cost AED70.
If you’ve already visited the Louvre or want to explore other options, nearby alternatives include the striking Zayed National Museum or Ferrari World, home to the world’s fastest roller coaster.
Evening: Dinner and shopping at a mall

There are plenty of ways to spend your evening in Abu Dhabi, but we chose to head to Al Wahda Mall. We were surprised by how affordable both the food and shopping were.
Located downtown, the mall is close to the Abu Dhabi bus station, connected to the Grand Millennium Al Wahda Hotel, and filled with activities such as a bowling alley and cinema. For local treats like pomegranate juice, pistachios, and my personal favourite — the kunafa croissant — head to the large Lulu Hypermarket.
Here’s one way to experience Abu Dhabi in a day. It’s budget-friendly and offers a well-rounded taste of the city — from architectural icons to everyday local life.
