Following what was a sweltering month of February, spring has sprung all around Malaysia. Reminiscent of Japan’s sakura trees, thousands of Tecoma trees – locally-known as tissue paper trees as its flowers have thin, delicate petals – have all bloomed at once. Painting parts of the cities and many neighbourhoods shades of pink and white, walks and runs are becoming rather dreamy these days, and there are heaps of photos and videos on social media to show for it!
As someone who lives in a neighbourhood lined with Tecoma trees, I see them bloom every year – but never all at once and with such dramatic flair. Have they always bloomed this way, and now that we’re outdoors more often (due to pandemic-related restrictions), we’re finally taking notice? Who really knows? Whatever it is, they’re here and will only be around for another few days or so (Tecoma trees bloom for about two weeks), so let’s appreciate them while we can.
