Heading to the far-off lands of Puchong? Okay, I’m kidding. It’s not THAT out of the way if you’re in the Subang Jaya or Putrajaya vicinity. With the ongoing development of Puchong, this distant land is no longer barren. And by that, we mean it’s becoming abundant in food spots.

Restaurants, cafes, and no frill spots abound, but only if you know where to find them.

Restaurant haunts

No list of Puchong food spots will be complete without Foo Hing Dim Sum. This is one of the few restaurants I will gladly travel and queue for. Their Dim Sum tastes divine – fresh and hot out of the steamer, and their Portuguese Egg Tart sends your tastebuds to heaven.

If you’re planning a trip here, make it an early breakfast (we’re talking 7am, when they open), or be prepared to brave the long line of Foo Hing Dim Sum devotees.

Tucked in the shoplots of Bandar Puteri is this little Bali haven. The flavours here hit the spot, and it’s no wonder the locals frequently flock here for dinner. Get their Bali Trio, a sharing platter where you can get the best of three worlds – a mix of Roasted Wings, Sate Lilit, and Fried Squid, served with two types of sambal and Cilantro Mayo.

Wash it all down with their refreshing Barley Lime drink. Not going to lie, writing this is making me drool; I can’t wait for my next meal here!

Although a simpler restaurant than most, Banh Mi Cafe serves up some classic Vietnamese dishes that soothe the soul. My go-to’s here are the Banh Mi Bo Kho (stewed beef with Vietnamese baguette) and Hu Tieu Suon (pork rib kway teow soup).

For those in the Taman Kinrara area, this is the Vietnamese restaurant to try. They’ve got the usual suspects like Banh Mi and Vietnamese Spring Rolls, but Mimi Nguyen also offers authentic dishes you may not have seen before. They’ve got frogs, balitongs, and periwinkles on the menu. If you’re yearning for a taste of authentic Vietnamese cuisine, expect to go all out here.

Hidden in a plant nursery, Sipping Corner provides the perfect space for a quiet escape. Order their signature Gula Melaka Matcha Latte while you sink your fork into delicious cakes and tuck into a good book.

My first experience with fluffy souffle pancakes was right here at Souffle Dessert Cafe. Located on the first floor of a shoplot, its bright facade is easily noticeable from the street level. If you’re having cravings for jiggly pancakes and ice cream, this is the place to go in Puchong.

The cafe is open from 11pm on Sundays to Thursdays and till 12am on Fridays and Saturdays. They’re closed on Tuesdays.

If you’ve never heard of Dáo Desserts, you’ve got to plan a visit soon. This soy-based dessert chain is a local dessert paradise. My personal favourites are the Dáo Panda and Sandáo. The Sandáo is a great alternative for those who need their fix of a plant-based soft serve.

Zero frills, tastebud thrills

Expect a no-frills communal eating experience at Restoran Chakra. It’s the perfect lunch spot for a quick in-and-out banana leaf rice meal. You’ll be well hydrated here too, with the friendly staff refilling your glass of water diligently.

This kopitiam is lined with hawker stalls selling an assortment of Chinese cuisine, serving the Puchong breakfast and lunch crowd. Their toasted bread and half-boiled eggs are great breakfast companions. For lunch, some tried-and-true options are Chicken Rice and Taiwanese Braised Pork Rice.
