Bangkok is colourful in every sense. From its bustling markets selling just about anything you fancy shopping for to its debaucherous nightlife, it’s no wonder it is one of the most visited cities in Southeast Asia, if not the world. But, perhaps the capital of Thailand is best known for its incredible food scene—we’re talking street eats with Michelin stars to finer establishments that won’t have you think twice about spending your hard-earned money; Bangkok is a city for the foodies. Even if you’re not one, this culinary paradise will very likely convert you.

When it comes to Michelin-rated spots, Jay Fai often comes to visitors’ minds. Made famous by travellers and mostly the hit show on Netflix, Street Food Asia, there’s no denying the food here is good. But like many places that get popular over time, prices tend to go up, quality hinders a little, and then there’s the queue. So, if you don’t mind skipping out on Jay Fai, here are some of my inclusive recommendations, which ought to satisfy even the fussiest of eaters.

Michelin star or nah: Nah, but on the Michelin-Bib Gourmand

Some who have been here say this is the best chicken rice they have ever tried, and as someone who’s been there and done that, I have to agree. After all, they have multiple Michelin-Bib Gourmand stickers to prove it at their entrance. Seriously though, their fried chicken is sOOOoooOO crispy and best of all, the signature dish is topped with an even crispier serving of fried garlic. Try other Thai classics while you’re there, but just don’t miss out on its most popular staple.

This place is infamous for its long, and I mean super long, queues. But when all is said and done, it is still hands down one of the best places you can go for authentic Mama Noodles Tom Yam in Bangkok. Served in a huge pot, as it should be, the noodles are made to be shared, especially if you’re a small eater. Their signature crispy pork is so crunchy and addictive, and their stir-fried tofu with shrimp is perfect as a side order or even to have as a main dish.

Want to brunch like you’re on holiday? Well then, head on over to Fran’s, where it’s an all-day brunch affair. They take it seriously here, which is evident in their menu. Their pancakes are generous, fluffy, and topped with sweet delights. Their steak and eggs are perfect for those who prefer something on the savoury side for breakfast. Caffeine lovers, the coffee here is decent, so grab yourselves a cuppa of fresh brew.

Right, so it’s a little on the steep side, but I promise you it is SO worth the money! Think of all your favourite Thai dishes beefed up, and I do mean quite literally. Their Pad Thai might just be one of the most expensive in this city, but it has so much meat that you’d think you were in Pad Thai heaven. However, if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, their version of Pad Ka Prao is equally flavourful and is packed with more meat than fillers.

Tucked away in Chinatown, Restaurant POTONG is helmed by Chef Pam, the youngest female chef ever to be awarded a Michelin star. The setting here is intimate and warm, a perfect environment to enjoy the perfect amalgamation of Thai and Chinese cuisines. Each dish with its creative fusion elements will surprise your tastebuds, and Chef Pam does well at storytelling with each plate served. The tasting menu is well worth the splurge and will certainly set the bar for any dining experience.

Imagine all of Thailand’s unique flavours and ingredients refined and curated into a tasting menu. That is the case at Samrub Samrub Thai. The menu is seasonal, so throughout the year, depending on the number of times you visit, it’s unlikely that you’ll taste the same thing twice. Many, including myself, have had their expectations surpassed when dining here. It’s a perfect place to go if you want to experience a Michelin-starred experience.
