Perak, a state rich in history, culture, and natural beauty, is becoming an increasingly popular destination for both local and international travellers. Starting next year, visitors staying in Perak will be introduced to a new RM3 local service charge. Here’s what you need to know about this new fee.

On January 1, 2025, the Perak state government will implement an RM3 local service charge per night for stays at hotels, homestays, and short-term rentals like Airbnb. As part of the Perak Hotel Enactment 2023, approved last May, this fee aims to enhance tourism infrastructure and services, ensuring a better experience for visitors.

The revenue from the charge will be reinvested in maintaining and upgrading tourist attractions and public facilities, and promoting Perak as a top destination, promising a brighter future for the state’s tourism industry.

From July 1, local councils will issue licenses for accommodation services, including hotels, campsites, chalets, boathouses, and homestays. Operators will have a generous one-year grace period to comply with the new regulations, providing them with ample time to adjust.

While other states have implemented similar charges under different names, Perak postponed its implementation to January 1, 2025, to accommodate tourists during Visit Perak Year 2024, ensuring an uninterrupted and welcoming experience.

So, pack your bags and get ready to discover all that Perak has to offer––from its bustling cities to its tranquil islands, and its delicious food.
