Planning your next adventure just got easier, especially if India is on your travel bucket list. In a significant move to boost tourism and tighten cultural ties, India has introduced a 30-day double-entry e-Tourist visa for Malaysian passport holders, completely free of charge and valid until 31 December 2026.
The newly introduced free e-Tourist visa isn’t just a symbolic gesture—it’s a practical game-changer. Here’s why it matters:
- Zero fees: Malaysians can now visit India without paying a single cent for visa processing before the end of 2026.
- Double-entry: Perfect for those planning regional tours that include Sri Lanka, Nepal, or Bhutan.
- Fully online: No need to queue at embassies. The whole process takes place on the official Indian e-Visa portal.
- Fast approvals: Most applicants receive their Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) via email within 72 hours.
How to apply for the free e-tourist visa to India
Step 1
Start by visiting the official Indian e-Visa website and selecting “e-Tourist Visa” as your visa type.
Step 2
Next, complete the online application form. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months from your intended date of entry and has at least two blank pages. You’ll need to provide details like your travel plans, accommodation, and personal information.
Step 3
After that, upload a recent passport-sized photo and a scanned copy of your passport’s bio page. Be sure to follow the formatting guidelines provided on the portal.
Step 4
Once you’ve uploaded the documents, simply submit your application. As a Malaysian passport holder, you can skip the payment step—this visa is completely free.
Step 5
You should receive your Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) by email within 72 hours. Print it out or keep a digital copy handy.
Step 6
Upon arrival in India, show your ETA and passport at immigration. A visa will be stamped directly into your passport, and you’ll be ready to explore India.
Who shouldn’t use this visa

The free 30-day e-Tourist visa is only for leisure travel. Malaysians visiting India for business, medical, conference, or wellness purposes (e.g., e-Business, e-Medical, e-Ayush visas) must apply separately and pay the standard fees. If you prefer a traditional paper visa, you can apply through IVS Global Services in six Malaysian cities or the High Commission of India in Kuala Lumpur, but normal fees and processing times apply.
Before you leave for your trip, apply for your e-Tourist visa at least a week before travel. Ensure your passport is valid for at least six months and has two blank pages. Once approved, print your ETA and keep a digital copy handy.
