The year-end holiday season is a time to look forward to. However, it could also be a stressful period for many, having to deal with overwhelming schedules at work and home, added expenses, and complex family dynamics. As far as travel goes, rates are high, traffic jams and delays are to be expected, and a lot of places are overcrowded. Still, there are places to go and things to do where you can find an oasis of calm amidst the chaos, for yourself and your immediate family.
Book a spa day

Take a break from all the planning, shopping, and entertaining for some time off to yourself to unwind and recharge your batteries. Many spa centres are likely to have year-end promotions, but do make reservations early, because they may be fully booked around this time, just like everywhere else.
If you can’t make it to a session, make your own spa day at home. Set aside time where you are not to be disturbed, then give yourself a facial or have a long soak in a tub to soothing music in an aromatised room. Think of it as a treat for yourself for having survived the holiday fuss. You deserve it!
Escape into nature

With malls, theme parks, and most public recreational places being crowded, you are more likely to find peace and quiet in the wild outdoors. This could be the best time to take your family on a camping trip, explore a nature reserve, or go on that hiking or caving adventure you’ve been wanting to. At least you’ll have a good excuse to turn down another party invitation.
Limit technology

It may not be realistic to ditch our smartphones entirely, but it is possible to refrain from posting on social media and significantly reduce our time spent scrolling through highlight reels. If trying to plan the perfect holiday for yourself and the whole family feels daunting, the last thing you need is more pressure by comparing yourself with everyone else. So, put a limit on time spent online and plan activities that leave no time for screen-gazing. After all, the holidays are a time to be mindful and present in the moment with loved ones.
Have a lazy day at home

What better way to save money and avoid crowds than by spending quality time with loved ones or having some quiet time to yourself at home? This is the time to indulge in what you’ve put on hold. So, give yourself permission to binge-watch a TV series in your pyjamas, start that DIY project you’ve been meaning to, tend to your garden, or try a new recipe. Allow yourself to rest and just be without obligations, schedules, or the need to show up for the world.
Visit lesser-known destinations

Take a road trip or plan a staycation somewhere that is not on the usual tourist circuit. Think about quaint small towns with cultural spots and signature local cuisines not found anywhere else; places where you can kick back and connect with the surroundings without the need for an itinerary. Not only are such places less costly to vacation in during peak travel season, but you could also be in for an experience of a lifetime, since lesser-known destinations are usually hidden gems waiting to be discovered.
Have a reading picnic

The holidays may be the best time to attend to your towering to-read pile, with a ‘book-nic’ or ‘book-cation’. Just pack a picnic mat, some light bites, and the book for the day, and head to a quiet, scenic spot at a park, a botanical garden, the beach, or even a cosy corner at home. You can even consider booking a short stay somewhere quiet, so that you can escape into an imaginary world uninterrupted. If you have fellow bookworms craving a quiet reading session, tell them to bring snacks and join you.
At the end of the day, the holiday season is not only a time to reconnect with friends and family, but also to relax and recharge before a new year begins. It is worth remembering that true enjoyment can be had from simple pleasures and intentional choices. So, set boundaries by saying no when necessary, and let go of the need to keep up. Your precious time, finances, and peace of mind are worth protecting.
