There’s no denying that Japan’s capital, Tokyo, is big and frantic, but that shouldn’t stop any family from visiting. Like most holidays, especially those with children, some planning will go a long way to avoid unforeseen mishaps. When you’re an adult, it’s easy to navigate narrow alleyways and crowded spaces. However, that may be different for kids.

While beautiful and, some say, futuristic, Tokyo can be sensory overloading. Even as an adult, I found this true during my last and every visit, so I can’t even imagine what it’d be like for kids’ growing brains. But again, planning goes a long way when making your way around this bustling metropolis with your children. Below are some of the spots I highly recommend, and not to worry, there’s something for everyone.

For eating out with the whole family

For parents who prefer not to resort to fast food during vacation, check out Omusubi Cafe, where healthy Japanese meals await your little ones. Everything here is additive-free, and your kids are spoilt for choice with over 10 types of rice balls to choose from.

They can also opt for ala carte pieces or order a meal set, which comes with three vegetable sides and the beloved miso soup. Those with strollers will be glad to know there’s a dedicated parking space outside the cafe.

Teppanyaki is usually a safe option to choose if your little one is not well-versed in Japanese cuisine, and Teppan Baby is the perfect place to start. The staff here are friendly, and we’re certain the theatrics of teppanyaki cooking will entertain the kids. There’s also an English menu available and gluten-free alternatives.

For retail therapy with little ones

With a name like Kiddy Land, you can expect an abundance of cutesy things for both kids and adults. But of course, little ones (and even older kids) will go wild for the selection of things here. From toys and small souvenir items to Snoopy and Pokemon merchandise, this store has it all. Kids may find it hard to hold back from buying all the Sanrio and Disney items their hearts desire, so brace your wallets!

Hands, formerly known as Tokyu Hands, is a department store chain located across Japan. You can find just about anything in here—think Target but on steroids. Everything sold here is simply to make life more beautiful. You name it, they have it.

From brightly-coloured stationery you never knew you needed to pillows that look so comfortable, you must simply purchase and lug back home in your luggage. Whether young or old, kids will get a dose of retail therapy here. And if you need a break, take a breather at the in-house cafe.

For a day of play with the kids

Check any list of things to do with kids in Japan, and Tokyo Disneyland will be on it 101% of the time. And while we won’t say no to all things Disney, for something more authentic and unique to Japan, we would recommend the Ghibli Museum, where all of Studio Ghibli’s art is showcased.

The museum is a wonder for the senses—from the ginormous Totoro greeting you at the entrance and the maze that is The Central Hall to The Saturn Theatre for Studio Ghibli shorts and the really cool reading room. You can easily spend a whole day here.

A truly Japanese experience is incomplete without some form of Hello Kitty dashed into your itinerary, and for this, we suggest Sanrio Puroland. This Sanrio-themed park offers a few rides, plenty of performances, and activities to keep little ones (and parents) busy.

The food here is pretty solid, considering it’s in a theme park. Watch Hello Kitty go about her daily life, and once you’re done, be sure to visit the souvenir shop for more Sanrio goodies.

For slow sightseeing with your tots

For days when you want to slow down with the kids and take in Tokyo’s greener side, visit Yoyogi Park in Shibuya. The scenery here is unreal, and it’s a great place to hang out with little ones in nature. There are plenty of food and drink stalls to keep you fuelled for your walks amongst the trees and winding paths.

Let your littles experience the true energy of Tokyo by walking to the famous Shibuya Crossing. Yes, we know it can be quite daunting with kids, but keep them close and allow them to soak in the sights and sounds of this bustling city. If you’re exploring the capital in the evening, make sure to pay a visit to the Hachiko Memorial Statue, too.
