Travelling to and from Malaysia is set to get easier with the relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions. As we move towards endemicity, travellers, many of whom have been largely confined to their homes for months, are starting to dream again of beaches, mountains, and places to explore.
What you need to know when travelling to/from Malaysia
From 1 May 2022, foreign travellers entering Malaysia will no longer need to have COVID-19 insurance. Pre-departure and on-arrival COVID-19 tests are also not required if you are completely vaccinated. And only those over the age of 12 is subject to this. The same rules apply to those travelling out of Malaysia.
If you’re only partially vaccinated or unvaccinated, you’ll be subjected to a five-day mandatory quarantine, as well as a pre-departure PCR test no later than two days before boarding your flight to Malaysia, and a supervised RTK test within 24 hours of arrival. This applies to anybody over the age of 18. They must also be quarantined for five days and undergo either an RT-PCR test on the fourth day or an RTK-AG test on the fifth day. Teenagers who have been partially vaccinated or who have not been vaccinated are exempt from quarantine.
To prepare for your trip, make sure you have the MySejahtera contact tracking app downloaded, registered, and activated, as well as a travel declaration with vaccination details filled out using the Traveller icon in the MySejahtera app. You will receive a Traveller’s Card on MySejahtera once you have completed the process. When you arrive, you must show your Traveller’s Card.
This same policy is applicable to all categories of travellers, including those going to perform the Umrah, Haj, as well as foreign workers. Umrah and Haj pilgrims are required to get a booster dose before they depart.

As for us Malaysians or those residing/visiting here, we can also look forward to the relaxation of more COVID-19 SOPs as announced by Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin. The following relaxations will take effect from 1 May 2022:
- Patients with COVID-19 must be isolated for seven days, but if a professionally administered RTK-Antigen test is negative, they may be released on the fourth day.
- COVID-19 patients and those in quarantine are still required to fulfil their Home Surveillance Order (HSO) and prohibited from entering public spaces.
- Premises will no longer require the public to check-in using the MySejahtera app.
- Entry to all premises will be allowed regardless of vaccination status.
- The wearing of face masks is not required outdoors, but is “strongly encouraged.”
- Face masks are still required to be worn indoors and on public transportation, including e-hailing services.
- Physical distancing is encouraged, but not required.
- Nightclubs are allowed to operate from May 15, subject to SOPs that will be announced later.
- For Hari Raya Aidilfitri, visiting and open houses will be allowed, with no cap on the number of visitors to a household.
