If you’re one of those Malaysians who enjoy eating kuih as a tea time snack, this guide is made for you. The recipes for these kuih Nyoya have been passed down for generations by Malay and Peranakan households, who have mostly lived among the straits of Melaka.

These bite-sized sweet and savoury desserts are made in various shapes and colours, making them almost impossible to resists. While it’s harder to find authentic kuih Nyoya nowadays, we went food-hunting and found eight of the best places that serve a variety of kuih, from bright, chewy ang ku kuih to grilled, fragrant pulut panggang. Are you salivating yet?

1. Baba Beng

The name Baba Beng is unique – Baba refers to the term for Peranakan males, while Beng is the part of the founder’s Chinese name, Quek Beng Chee. The shop’s popular pick, which is the variety set, consists of 33 pieces of kuih priced at only RM45.
Among the 33 pieces include kuih kochi, pulut tekan, kuih lapis, kuih talam, pulut panggang, and more. You can also top up the homemade Melaka-style Nyonya Kaya to serve as the perfect complement.
