For anyone who has spent the night in a kampung, falling asleep to the nocturnal symphony of chirping crickets and croaking frogs is usually a fond memory. However, not many have had the privilege to swap counting sheep for fireflies, just like I did during childhood when my family made frequent excursions to my father’s hometown in Kedah.
Now, some of us have exchanged the sounds of nature for the hum of an urban city. And with the recent news of declining firefly populations due to environmental changes, we might very well be the last generation to witness their enchanting beauty.
Take the opportunity to witness Malaysia’s beautiful firefly colonies while supporting local eco-tourism. Your visit could help drive greater awareness and conservation efforts, ensuring these glowing wonders continue to light up our nights for generations to come.
1. Kampung Kuantan Firefly Park, Selangor
Being one of three firefly parks that can be found in Kuala Selangor, Kampung Kuantan Firefly Park is said to have one of the largest firefly colonies in the world. This certainly gets visitors coming, so you might need to brave a bit of a queue if it’s peak tourist season. Here, you get to admire fireflies in their natural state by going on a sampan (non-motorised wooden boat) ride. The quiet boat ride means minimal disturbance to the fascinating insects while giving you the opportunity for an up-close experience.
Address: Kampung Kuantan Firefly Park, Kampung Kuantan, 45000 Kuala Selangor, Selangor
2. Kota Tinggi Firefly Park, Johor
A short drive away from the town of Kota Tinggi brings you to this hidden gem in Johor. For the best firefly viewing experience, it is recommended to book the earliest boat tour that starts at 7:30pm. The educational 45-minute boat ride is accompanied by experienced tour guides sharing information about conservation efforts in preserving firefly habitats.
If you’re lucky, you may even spot other wildlife such as the occasional monkey or monitor lizards along the riverbanks! For something special post-boat ride, light up paper lanterns and make a wish with your loved ones or write heartwarming messages on love locks you can leave at the park.
Address: Kota Tinggi Firely Park, Jalan Kota Tinggi, 81900 Kota Tinggi, Johor
3. JSK River Cruise, Sabah
Attention, wildlife lovers! Kota Belud is a safe haven for many Sabah wildlife, and catching a glimpse of the remarkable firefly here is on a whole other level. As part of their conservation efforts, the experience provided by JSK River Cruise comprises an extensive, full-day educational tour. Spot proboscis monkeys, kingfishers, and river otters during the day, and in the evening, view the literal stars of the show; the magical fireflies.
For everything you need to know about planning a trip to Kota Belud, their website has no shortage of information, which will make planning a trip here all the more convenient. If you have never visited Sabah, this might be an excellent place to start.
Address: JSK River Cruise, Jalan Rampayan Laut, 89150 Kota Belud, Sabah
4. Kemaman Zoo & Recreation Park, Terengganu
Situated along a river where the firefly colony of Kemaman thrives, the Kemaman Zoo & Recreation Park gives visitors a chance to take a luminescent journey through Sungai Yak Yah (Yak Yah River). The operating hours for the firefly attraction differ from the zoo’s, so visitors are advised to arrive by 7:00pm to prepare for the 30-minute boat ride.
The Kemaman Zoo is a great attraction if you’re looking for a day of marvelling at elephants, tigers, and other animals, then ending the day with a quiet boat ride puttering through Sungai Yak Yah to watch the firefly colony.
Address: Taman Rekreasi dan Zoo Kemaman, Majlis Perbandaran Kemaman, Kampung Tabuan, 24000 Kemaman, Terengganu
5. Firefly Park Resort Bukit Belimbing, Selangor
If a half-hour evening boat ride doesn’t satiate your fascination for these electrifying (figuratively) insects, the Firefly Park Resort in Bukit Belimbing might be your best bet. You will potentially get a similar experience as I did in my childhood—falling asleep to counting fireflies.
We cannot guarantee that this will 100% be your experience, as the chalet area will naturally be noisier and brighter than the fireflies would like. However, you can also always revel in a good chalet stay where there is easy access to the standard firefly boat ride experience.
Comfortable chalets stand along the riverbank, featuring two types of cabins: one fits up to 2 persons while the other up to 4 persons. They’re complete with modern amenities, giving visitors restful nights in.
Who knows? Perhaps during quieter nights, one or two fireflies might just slip into your cabin in bouts of curiosity.
Address: Firefly Park Resort, Jalan Haji Omar, Kampung Bukit Belimbing, 45000 Kuala Selangor, Selangor
6. Kampung Dew Firefly, Perak
Known to most as a fishermen’s village, Kampung Dew only grew in fame as a firefly-watching spot in recent years due to the abundance of the Berembang tree, otherwise scientifically known as Sonneratia Caseolaris, that grows in the area.
This may be the most underrated firefly-watching spot on the list, but Kampung Dew has earned its place as one of the top three successful firefly conservation sanctuaries in the world. What a fantastic feat! It is all thanks to the constant collaboration between villagers, the Malaysian Nature Society, and Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia for their conservation efforts of the firefly colony here.
Additionally, bird enthusiasts could also find joy in this little village near Taiping. Apart from fireflies, Kampung Dew is also an ideal place for bird watching due to the many local and migratory bird species that can be found soaring through the skies here, including the brahminy kite eagle and the little heron. Safe to say, Kampung Dew is wrapped in nature all around, making it an excellent respite away from the city while supporting local eco-tourism.
