London doesn’t just celebrate Christmas; it goes all out with streets lit up, magical Christmas markets, and steaming cups of mulled wine! (Left: Image by @london.universe. Right: Image by @hyattplacelondoncityeast.)
There are two types of people who go to London in December:
- Those who think winter holidays are peaceful, and
- Those who have accepted that they’ll spend most of their time lamenting about being cold, speed-walking, and saying “Wow, this is so magical” every 12 minutes.
Whichever camp you fall into, London welcomes you with festive sparkle, busy but festive markets, Christmas carols echoing through train stations, and an unreasonable amount of mulled wine. It’s charming but cold, it’s chaotic but cold, it’s just freezing, but it is 100% worth every moment, and the kind of Christmas vibe we simply can’t emulate in a tropical climate.
Here are ten things you absolutely can’t skip when visiting London during Christmas 2025:
1. Wander through Winter Wonderland
(Hyde Park’s giant Christmas playground)
London’s most iconic festive takeover is back, and yes, it’s still chaotic in the best possible way. Winter Wonderland serves up everything from roller coasters and an ice slide to Bavarian beer halls, game booths, holiday shops, and more festive snacks than your stomach signed up for.
Go early, layer up, and budget for mulled wine (can you tell we love mulled wine?) because it is delicious and somehow always sneakily expensive.
Zafigo festive tip: Book your time slot early! 2025 is expected to have new rides and expanded market areas, so crowds will be extra lively.
2. Catch the Christmas lights
(Oxford Street, Regent Street & Covent Garden)
London treats its light displays like the Met Gala of street décor: big, dramatic, and unapologetically fabulous. Regent Street is set to bring back its classic glowing angel, Oxford Street debuts fresh designs each year, and Covent Garden does Pinterest-core with giant baubles and a massive Christmas tree.
While Kuala Lumpur is a pro at mall decorating for the Christmas season, nothing beats lit up streets in the city. Stroll through all three and pretend you’re the protagonist in a holiday rom-com. Main character energy is free.
3. Explore the Christmas markets
This is a must! London’s Christmas markets are where you go to snack, shop, and suddenly convince yourself you do need another handmade ornament. Or artisanal candle. Or a third cup of hot chocolate.
Top markets to hit in 2025 are the Southbank Centre Winter Market, which will be atmospheric, scenic, and perfect for foodies. Then there’s Leadenhall Market: Victorian vibes + stunning photo ops. And finally, Kingston Christmas Market, cosy and underrated, the kind of Christmas market you never thought you needed.
4. Ice skate at Somerset House
What is a winter Christmas without some ice-skating? Somerset House transforms into London’s prettiest skating rink—complete with a towering Christmas tree, upbeat music, and photo ops around every corner. You’ll either glide like a pro or cling to the railing with dignity. Either way, it’s part of the holiday charm.
Bonus: Evening sessions are pure Christmas magic; the lights alone are worth the bruises.
5. Visit Kew Gardens’ Christmas at Kew
This is where Christmas meets cottagecore. Kew Gardens’ winter light trail winds through sparkling trees, glowing tunnels, art installations, and cosy fire pits where you can roast marshmallows. It’s beautiful, serene, and far less chaotic than the city centre. A must for couples, families, and anyone who wants a magical night without crowds.
6. See a festive theatre show
London’s December theatre lineup is consistently iconic and an experience that shouldn’t be missed. From timeless classics and quirky new holiday productions to famed animation favourites, you’ll be really spoiled for choice: The Snowman, The Nutcracker (a tradition for many), Holiday specials across the West End, and even Bluey. We know it’s not very Christmassy, but Hercules is a must-watch! Be sure to make your bookings early, as Christmas theatre sells out faster than gingerbread at a bake sale.
7. Pop into London’s museums for festive programming
When your fingers are numb and your nose is questioning your festive activity choices, museums are your warm, culturally enriching sanctuary. Many of London’s best museums offer holiday events, special exhibitions, concerts, and themed workshops.
On your list should be: Natural History Museum (often beautifully decorated), V&A Museum (craft workshops + design exhibits) and of course, The British Museum (seasonal tours and global holiday traditions).
8. Take a Christmas river cruise on the Thames
Seeing London from the water at night feels like you’re re-enacting a rom-com movie scene. Several companies run festive-themed cruises in December, offering everything from live carols to dinner and commentary. It’s cosy, romantic, and a great way to show off your best winter outfits while taking in London’s magic. A top pick for couples and for anyone in that reflective holidays mood.
9. Shop (or just window shop) at Harrods, Selfridges & Liberty
Even if your budget says “maybe not”, your eyes will be grateful for the experience. These department stores go all out with their Christmas displays during the holidays. Think oversized ornaments, themed windows, interactive setups, and decor that really puts into perspective what Christmas should really look like everywhere else in the world.
Our top picks have got to be Harrods’ iconic Christmas façade, Selfridges’ creative themed windows, and Liberty’s dreamy wooden interior filled with ornaments. You don’t have to buy a thing. Just wander and bask in the festive glow.
10. All Aboard The Polar Express London
And finally, the piece de resistance of all things Christmas. If you grew up watching The Polar Express and secretly hoped your ticket to the North Pole would one day arrive… congratulations, your moment has come.
London’s Polar Express Train Ride, inspired by the beloved book and film, brings the story to life with actors, hot chocolate, cookies, carols, and the thrill of hearing ‘The First Gift of Christmas’. Like the book and movies, one can expect singing chefs, golden tickets, big nostalgic energy and a whole lot of Christmas magic you didn’t know you needed.
Great for families, couples, and grown adults who aren’t afraid of reclaiming childhood joy. Book super early because this special adventure sells out fast every year.
