One promises cool-weather relaxation, the other non-stop entertainment. Here’s how to choose the best highlands escape for your family. (Left image by @resortsworldgenting. Right image by @mfaisalparman.)
It doesn’t take much for Malaysians to start planning a trip to the highlands. A long weekend appears on the calendar, school holidays roll around, a close family friend’s birthday comes up, or everyone simply needs a break from the city. Before long, the same two destinations are being suggested—Cameron Highlands or Genting Highlands.
Both have been family favourites for generations, but each offers a completely different experience. One is built around slowing down, enjoying nature, and lingering over meals, while the other is all about excitement, entertainment, and making the most of every hour. Neither is better than the other; it just comes down to the kind of family holiday you’re looking for.
Best for families with young children
Hands down, Cameron Highlands is often the easier choice. There is something about the slower pace that works well when travelling with little ones. You are not zipping from attraction to attraction, and the days naturally leave room for snack breaks, afternoon naps, and the unexpected stops that always seem to happen when travelling with children.
There’s also plenty to keep them entertained without everything feeling overly structured. Picking strawberries straight from the farm, visiting butterfly gardens, feeding rabbits, or simply running around in the cool weather can easily fill an entire day.
Parents may appreciate the cooler temperatures just as much because spending time outdoors is far more comfortable, especially if you’re pushing a stroller or carrying a toddler who has decided halfway through the day that they no longer want to walk.
Best for families with teenagers
Genting Highlands tends to have the upper hand because teenagers often want a little more freedom and excitement, and Genting delivers plenty of both. Between the outdoor theme park, indoor attractions, arcades, shopping and entertainment, there is rarely a moment when someone complains they’re bored.
For parents, it can also be one of those rare holidays where everyone gets to enjoy themselves in different ways. While the teenagers head off for another ride or spend time exploring the malls, parents can slow down with a coffee or a nice bowl of hot Hai Di Lao Hot Pot before meeting up again later. It’s the kind of destination that lets everyone holiday at their own pace without feeling like they’re on completely separate trips. It’s really a win-win.
Best for action-packed family holidays
Some families are just wired this way and are happiest when every hour is planned. If that sounds like your family, Genting Highlands will probably be the better fit. Besides the obvious theme park, there are indoor attractions, shopping, cinemas, live entertainment, and seasonal events throughout the year.
Even if the weather changes, there is still plenty to do without needing to adjust your plans too much, so your itinerary remains fairly predictable. It is the sort of holiday where the biggest challenge is deciding what to fit into the day rather than wondering what to do next.
Best for multi-generational family trips
Multi-generational holidays can be tricky to plan because everyone’s idea of a good holiday is usually different, but this is where Cameron Highlands shines. Many of its attractions encourage a slower pace, from walking through tea plantations to browsing local markets or stopping at cafes overlooking the hills. Even meals become part of the experience, particularly a leisurely steamboat dinner where everyone gathers around the same table for hours.
That isn’t to say there is nothing to do, but Cameron Highlands doesn’t unintentionally force you to squeeze as much as possible into a single day. Instead, it gives families the space to spend time together, which is often the reason for the trip in the first place.
Best for budget-friendly family holidays
Family holidays add up quickly, especially once accommodation, meals, attraction tickets, and unforeseen extra spending are factored in.
While neither destination is as inexpensive as it once was, Cameron Highlands generally offers better value. Accommodation tends to be more affordable; there are plenty of apartments suitable for larger families, and many of the best experiences cost very little. A drive through the tea plantations, a visit to the local markets, or an afternoon spent enjoying the scenery can be just as memorable as the paid attractions.
Genting Highlands, on the other hand, is slightly different. Once theme park tickets, shopping, and entertainment are added to the itinerary, costs can add up, particularly for larger families.
Best for a weekend getaway
Sometimes convenience matters just as much as the destination itself, especially if outings get pretty hectic with your family. For families based in the Klang Valley, Genting Highlands is the easier weekend escape. The drive is relatively short, and most attractions are located within the same area, making it possible to fit plenty into just two days. Cameron Highlands is still well worth the journey, but the longer drive means it works best when you have a little more time to enjoy it without feeling rushed.
So, which one is right for your family?
The answer depends less on the destination and more on what your family wants from the holiday. If what your family is looking for is fresh air, slower mornings, and quality time outdoors, Cameron Highlands would be the top choice. It is a place where the itinerary naturally loosens, conversations last a little longer, and everyone seems to relax into a gentler pace.
If your family enjoys keeping busy, trying new attractions and packing as much as possible into a weekend, Genting Highlands is likely to be the better choice. There is always something happening, making it ideal for families with older children or teenagers who are looking for a little more excitement.
The good news is that there isn’t a wrong answer, as both destinations have earned their place as family favourites because they offer something different. It all comes down to the kind of memories you want to make together.
