In our first Chit Chat for this new year, we spoke to the wonderful Tunku Mona Riza, about her latest movie, Rain Town.
Tunku Mona Riza is a Film Director, Producer, and the Founder of Current Pictures. After graduating from the New York Film Academy, and the success of several Malaysian television movies, she pursued the path of producing and directing feature films.
Her debut feature film, Redha, which a lot of us may be familiar with, earned an outstanding 17 international and local awards, making it one of the most awarded Malay-language films locally.
Now, her latest offering, Rain Town, which is set in Taiping AND is Tunku Mona’s first film to be primarily dialogued in Cantonese, is about to hit theatres. If Rain Town is anything like previous works, we can be sure to expect a truly heartfelt story.
Here are some of the topics covered in the chat:
- How the story of Rain Town came to Tunku Mona Riza, and why was it important to tell.
- Highlights and challenges directing a film in a different language.
- Why Taiping was chosen as the town to locate this film.
