Travelling is one of the best things to do in life. Now find out why trying out new food is the reason travelling is the best adventure!
Hello Zafigo is back for a third season and host Marina Mahathir is kicking things off with three major foodies who travel specifically to gain culinary inspiration – “queen of spice” Sapna Anand; chief eating officer of The BIG Group, Benjamin Yong; and Food Hero Asia winner, Ili Sulaiman. These gastronomes come together to talk about their tantalising adventures, delicious discoveries, and the flavourful inspirations behind some of their most popular ventures.
A Le Cordon Bleu alumnus, Sapna Anand is a chef, cooking show host, cookbook author, and restaurant consultant. A Kochi native, she has called Kuala Lumpur home for 21 years now but also has had the opportunity to live in the States (where she first started exploring cooking) and Ireland. Her travels have influenced the way she sees and cooks the food she grew up with. She works closely with restaurants to help curate their menus and from time to time, conducts on-demand cooking classes where she shares unique dishes and flavours inspired by her home country.
Having grown up in a household where cooking was what kept the family close, Benjamin Yong decided to make the kitchen his sanctuary. As founder and CEO (chief eating officer as he likes to call himself) of The BIG Group, he has taken this passion and turned it into eateries, a grocer chain, a catering business, and a B&B in the UK. The restaurateur who started travelling at a very young age says that the opportunity to be able to do so has helped him understand different cultures which he uses as inspiration for his own creations.
Born mix-raced (mum is half-Chinese, half-British and dad is half-Sri Lankan, half-Malay), chef, foodpreneur, TV personality, and Asian Food Network ambassador Ili Sulaiman grew up being exposed to and loving food from different cuisines. It came as no surprise that her interest in cooking and food developed at a young age. While living in the UK, she worked at one of London’s most prestigious fine dining restaurants, Mosimann’s, where she gained professional experience in the F&B industry. She then went on to compete and won the Food Hero Asia 2015 title, a competition run by the Asian Food Channel and Food Network Asia.
