They say that if you find someone who speaks your language, you won’t have to spend a lifetime translating your soul. The five love languages, a concept created by Dr Gary Chapman, explains that we all give and receive love in these five ways: Words of Affirmation, Quality Time, Physical Touch, Acts of Service, and Receiving Gifts.

It’s easy to find your love language by taking The Love Language Quiz online. If you’ve done this with your partner in the past, you probably already know what their love language is. But, results can change over time as we evolve and life progresses, so it’s worth taking it again if you’re unsure.

One way to identify your partner’s love language is by watching closely how they express affection for you and others. Observe what makes them light up, ease their burdens, and make them feel loved when you are together.

Whatever your answer is, we’re certain they would fall into the category of one of the five love languages, with one or two taking precedence over others.

Words have power, and some of us are more susceptible to them than others. If you’re in love with a lover of words, they’ll appreciate affirmations that are verbalised. Take them to a small gig in the city and be serenaded all night with love songs. The Bee in Publika often hosts smaller, more intimate music performances you and your partner may enjoy.

Or serenade them yourself by planning a karaoke date night where you can sing to them all the songs that remind you of them. Whether you’re a Nightingale or a little tone-deaf, you’re guaranteed a night of singing your heart out, pee-your-pants laughter, and smiles worth the mortification.

Opportunities for romance are not just found in big gestures. More often than not, love can be expressed in simple, mundane things.

Switch up your regular workout routine and surprise your partner with an evening at a climbing gym like Camp 5 or BUMP Bouldering. It’s a fun skill to pick up together, especially if you are more of an adventurous spirit who doesn’t mind being pushed out of your comfort zone.

For those who appreciate quality time, sometimes a couple of hours spent offline or having your undivided attention makes for a wonderful date night.

We all need somebody to lean on; some of us need it quite literally. Needing physical touch is not so much about inappropriate and excessive displays of affection but rather a longing to feel that you are safe, desired and loved.

Gestures like a sincere hug, holding someone’s hand, or rubbing their back can calm their anxiety, relieve stress, and lift their moods.

What better way to spend date night than to fold in your lover’s arms ice skating? Head to Icespace Ice Rink or Sunway Pyramid Ice for an evening of gliding on ice, hand-in-hand, hypnotised by movement, rhythm, and music.

But, if the cold isn’t your thing, take your partner out dancing instead. Don your favourite glad rags and make your way to KL’s Havana Bar & Grill for good food, fun music, and lots of dancing.

There’s a common misconception that loving gifts makes someone shallow and materialistic, and that they are not easy to please. Yet, those with the love language of gift giving and receiving are more often than not, thoughtful, sentimental, and treasure gifts even if they aren’t great because it reminds them of people they love. They enjoy loving others and hope to be loved with the same measure.

Scents have a way of bringing us back to a place or reminding us of people and seasons in life. They’re memories in a bottle. For your gift-loving partner, spoil them with a custom-made bottle of perfume. Book a Perfume Bar Session at 8to8 for both you and your partner to blend a fresh signature scent together.

The in-house perfumer will guide you in creating your personalised scent. It is a nice way to switch up the usual date nights and create something fun and memorable.
