Participatory and skill-based experiences have become a new kind of lifestyle currency. Instead of passive consumption, more people are seeking workshops, outdoor experiences and community-led activities, where they can build confidence, learn practical skills, and find supportive communities.
Representation also plays a crucial role in this movement. Women are increasingly at the centre of these experiences, resulting in a growing ecosystem where they can show up as beginners, ask questions, learn new skills, and find support without intimidation.
In Malaysia, a growing number of women are creating exactly these kinds of communities. Here are just a handful of the impactful Malaysian women leading this movement.
Ranessa Theyakaraja
Creating Spaces for Connection & Emotional Wellbeing
At the heart of Women’s Circle of Malaysia is a simple but powerful idea: women need safe spaces to be heard. Ranessa Theyakaraja founded the community to address a growing need for intentional spaces where women can talk, listen, and feel understood.
Through women’s circles and workshops, participants gather to share experiences, reflect and build supportive relationships. These sessions offer a gentle but powerful reminder that personal growth often begins with simply being heard.
Aida Ihsani
Helping Women Reclaim the Outdoors
Aida Ihsani is best known for creating women-only spaces that encourage self-reliance and confidence through hands-on learning and outdoor experiences. What began as her personal journey into woodworking evolved into a wider mission to help women step into spaces traditionally seen as male-dominated.
Today, women can join her woodworking workshops, outdoor skills sessions, and hiking trips designed to be beginner-friendly and supportive. Participants learn to use tools, navigate nature and trust their own capabilities — often discovering confidence they didn’t realise they had.
Aida Zunaidi & Wong Wei Qi
Championing Financial Agency
For many women, financial independence begins with access to the right guidance and community. That is the focus of Ibupreneur, founded by Aida Zunaidi and Wong Wei Qi to support women seeking financial independence through entrepreneurship.
Their programmes focus on helping women start businesses, re-enter the workforce, and develop sustainable income streams. Through bootcamps, workshops, and networking events, participants gain practical skills and connect with peers and mentors. The programmes provide both knowledge and a community that encourages women to pursue their ambitions with confidence.
Roshinee Mookaiah
Empowerment through Civic Storytelling
Roshinee Mookaiah works at the intersection of storytelling, youth engagement, and civic participation. Her activism and content aim to make public discourse more accessible and inclusive, particularly for young Malaysians.
Roshinee is also the founder of Mekar Kami, a community-led movement that makes social justice and civic participation accessible to young Malaysian women. Through the movement, participants learn about civic literacy, storytelling for advocacy, and community organising. By demystifying public participation, their workshops and meetups help participants build the confidence to engage with the issues shaping their lives and communities.
Rina Ho
Connecting Women to Health, Tech & Opportunity
Technology and healthcare are increasingly intertwined, and women are carving out space in both fields. Rina Ho is the founder and CEO of Pistil, a Malaysian femtech platform focused on improving access to women’s healthcare and reproductive education.
As Community Events Manager for Women in Tech Malaysia, she helps organise talks, networking sessions and community events that connect women across the tech ecosystem. Through these gatherings, women can learn about careers in tech, entrepreneurship and digital innovation while building supportive professional networks — creating spaces where knowledge, opportunity and community come together.
Annice Lyn & Aisha Nazar
Creating Space for Women Behind the Lens
Annice Lyn and Aisha Nazar co-founded Women Photographers Malaysia to support and amplify women working behind the camera. Their platform connects creatives across experience levels, from beginners to professionals.
Through workshops, meetups, mentorship, and exhibitions, women can learn technical skills, build portfolios, and connect with a supportive creative community. The result is a growing network helping women find their voice through visual storytelling.
Together, these initiatives reflect a broader shift toward community over competition and growth over escape. Be it through outdoor adventures, storytelling workshops, business programmes, or community circles, they are creating spaces where women can learn, connect and take up space in new ways. For those ready to try something new, communities are not just invitations — they are starting points.
