There’s something quietly thrilling about discovering a place that feels like a secret, especially when it’s tucked inside a mall you’ve visited countless times.

JIN Gastrobar, hidden within Aurum Theatre at The Gardens Mall in Kuala Lumpur, feels exactly like that kind of find. From the outside, you might not expect much more than a pre-movie dining option. Step in and it quickly reveals itself as a stylish little escape, part lounge, part restaurant, with the kind of atmosphere that makes you forget you’re technically still in a shopping complex.

We were invited to a tasting preview of JIN’s refreshed menu, which meant sampling a generous spread of new additions across starters, mains, and desserts. While it was a media event rather than a leisurely outing, it still offered a good sense of what an evening at JIN could feel like: refined yet relaxed, polished without feeling intimidating.

A gastrobar with lounge energy

The space leans heavily into its gastrobar identity. While there are dining tables, the bar is clearly the heart of the room, anchoring the mood with its warm lighting and lounge-style booth seating. Its setting works whether you’re on a date, catching up with your besties, or carving out some solo time with a meal and drink before a movie.

Standouts from the refreshed menu

Food-wise, the refreshed menu feels thoughtfully put together, leaning towards modern continental comfort with a few indulgent highlights. Among everything we tried, three dishes stood out in a memorable way:

The Mentaiko Linguine was a quiet star and my personal favourite of the afternoon. Rich and savoury without feeling heavy, it’s a dish you’d crave on a low-effort, high-reward night out. The Lobster Bisque was another unapologetically comforting standout. It felt like solid value for a seafood-forward dish, especially when paired with other ocean-inspired plates on the menu.

Then there was the O’Connor’s Black Angus Ribeye, which delivered exactly what you’d want from a steak: bold flavour, satisfying char, and a sense of indulgence that feels worthy of a special night out.

Not everything demanded the same level of attention. Some of the more familiar menu items, like the Chicken Karaage starter, were pleasant but didn’t particularly stand out against the stronger dishes. That said, when a menu is this extensive, it’s natural for certain plates to shine brighter than others.

Seafood lovers will likely find good value here. Dishes like the Lobster Roll and Chargrilled Octopus also feel like worthwhile splurges and are well-suited to the gastrobar’s slightly elevated positioning.

Cocktails, gin, and keeping it simple

Drinks are very much part of JIN’s DNA, and the gin-forward identity comes through clearly. We tried a Gin Calamansi cocktail, which struck a nice balance between citrusy brightness and botanical depth. The cocktail list isn’t overly long, and honestly, that feels like a plus. Instead of overwhelming you with endless options, it offers a curated selection that feels intentional and well thought out. Sometimes, a simpler menu makes it easier to settle into the night and just enjoy your drink.

A pocket of escape in the city

Taken as a whole, JIN feels like an unexpectedly relaxed stop and the kind of place we’d recommend to a KL visitor who wants a quieter, more contained evening. If someone only had one night in the city and wasn’t in the mood for bar-hopping or a full-on night out, this could make the cut as a softer, more laid-back option. Dinner, a drink, maybe a movie at Aurum — all without needing to venture far.

It’s also a spot we can see ourselves returning to, especially on a future movie night. Something is appealing about pairing a show with a proper meal, all in one space.

Dine, post, and enjoy a complimentary mocktail

For those who enjoy a little incentive with their night out, JIN is currently running a “Dine & Post, Get Rewarded” campaign:

The first 300 GSC Rewards members who dine in and share an Instagram Story of their visit (tagging @jingastrobar) between 21 January and 21 March 2026 will receive a complimentary mocktail. It’s a small but fun perk if you’re already planning to stop by.
