In Memoriam: Nelleisa Omar

Dear Nell,

When I first found out that you’d be one of the speakers at the inaugural ZafigoX event, I was elated, my immediate reaction being, “Oh, yay! A friend!”

While on the outside you were always strong, I was privileged to see the different sides of you too, through the eyes of the friends you held closest to your heart. And that’s what you were first and foremost – a friend.

I’ve known you before your fight began, and even when faced with the worst and most troubling times ahead, that never changed who you truly were. Quirky, spirited and animated, you brought your key qualities into your fight with breast cancer. You never let your circumstances win. As they say, when the going gets tough, the tough gets going.

This is how I’m remembering you. This is how Zafigo is remembering you.

During ZafigoX, you shared your best days with us, and we can’t thank you enough. You reminded everyone that while we’re alive, we need to truly live. So much so that even in your leaving us, you’ve left something that lives on in all of us. You, our dear Nell, are a mover and shaker. Gone too soon, but never forgotten.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un. We belong to God, and to Him we shall return.
