If there is something that Samantha Brown, Anthony Bourdain, and Janet Hsieh taught us, it’s to always be curious about the world. These travel hosts shaped an entire generation of travel enthusiasts and holiday-goers by taking us along on their journey in search of the weird and wonderful. Travel shows and documentaries are great tools, helping us broaden our scope when it comes to seeing the world.
So from one generation to the next, here are the Netflix shows we recommend to fellow globetrotters.
1. Somebody Feed Phil
Discover the world one good meal at a time with Phil Rosenthal. Phil, creator of the 90s sitcom Everybody Loves Raymond, brings us along on a wholesome and hilarious journey across various countries as he is joined by old friends, family, chefs, artists, and more in this travel series. Fostering connections, taking in beautiful landscapes, and discovering culture through a meal is what he does best. Expect laughter, dancing, and perhaps some tears with each episode. It’s a great show for the whole family! We highly recommend it.
2. Our Great National Parks
If you’re a sucker for a good nature documentary, this one is for you. Hosted by former President of the USA, Barack Obama, Our Great National Parks is a five-part docuseries about the most breathtaking and diverse national parks in the world. From Australia’s Great Barrier Reef to Patagonia and Indonesia, rediscover the wonder, beauty, and delight of the natural world. Educational, stunning, and hopeful, this is another great programme to watch with the family.
3. Street Food
No matter where you go, you’ll often find street food to be the beating heart of a city. From Southeast Asian markets to the sidewalks of New York City, flavour, culture, tradition, and innovation meet in an often simple and inexpensive dish. Netflix’s Street Food series, including Street Food Asia, Street Food USA, and Street Food Latin America, takes you on a trip uncovering the world’s best-kept food secrets. Discover hidden gems, get to know the faces behind your favourite dishes, and the stories that led to the scents and flavours we’re exposed to when we travel.
4. Abstract: The Art Of Design
We’re switching gears here—food and the natural environment often take center stage when it comes to travelling, but art and design influence nearly all aspects of our expeditions. Whether it’s the hotels we’re staying at, the galleries and museums we visit, the clothes we wear, or the architecture that takes our breath away, design is all around us. See the world through the lens of the world’s most remarkable and influential designers, and how their work shapes the world we see and experience around us. Featuring Bjarke Ingels, Tinker Hatfield, Ruth Carter, and more.
5. The Elephant Whisperers
Some of our best travels come from surprising places, usually informed by a film we’ve watched, books we’ve read, or stories shared by friends. Stories fuel our curiosity and desire to experience more. Set in the forest of Tamil Nadu, The Elephant Whisperers tells the story of a South Indian couple, Bellie and Bomman, as they spend their lives devoted to caring for Raghu, an orphaned baby elephant. It is a story of love, kindness, and the power of empathy between people and the natural world. Heart-warming, eye-opening, and utterly joyful, this short documentary will be one you and your family will enjoy together.
6. Salt Fat Acid Heat
Join Chef Samin Nosrat on a culinary mission to master the four elements of cooking—salt, fat, acid, heat. In this four-part docuseries, Chef Samin takes us to Italy, Japan, Yucatán, and California’s Chez Panisse, where she began her career. Her energy is infectious, warm, and joyful as she teaches us how perfecting these simple elements can transform our food and inadvertently shift the way we travel and see the world.
7. Jack Whitehall: Travels With My Father
Stand-up comic Jack Whitehall dives headfirst into the trip of a lifetime with Michael, his father, in this travelogue series. Comedy ensues as the two have very different expectations on the journey, finding themselves in awkward, unexpected, and wild adventures. From Southeast Asia to the Balkans and jolly old England, the father and son duo show us that there is nothing quite like travelling with family. The series includes the use of strong language and adult themes wrapped in affectionate and hilarious British banter.
